Oilers would have a decision on who to protect at defence pre expansion draft. And is Barrie really that good?

Avs aren't in a position to give up 2 marquee players including one on defense and not get a quality defender back. Value also a bit off w/ Duchene being the best piece in the trade. Not a great fit

I mean, Draisaitl was a 3rd overall pick and has more points than Duchene....

That would be one tempting offer. I think Avs might have to take it, Draisaitl is the real deal.
I see it Ebs for Barrie and Dutch for Draisaitl. Which might be pretty fair

I see it Barrie>Ebs but Draisaitl>Dutch so it evens out, plus Colorado gets a little younger.

yeah and they solidify their Top 6 a bit more, especially on the Right side.

Landy Mack Ebs
(Top pick) Draisaitl Rantanen

It makes their D worse but unless they feel like they have a shot at a guy like Shattenkirk as a UFA, I could see them trying to pull something like this off

The Avs D is in disarray and moving Barrie will not help matters.

That is correct, but like I said in my post, unless they have another move in mind that can bring in another Top 4 dman, like for some reason confident they can sign Shattenkirk, they couldn't afford to do this deal

woah woah woah. Lets slow our role here just a little bit. I'm a huge fan of Draisaitl. I've been a huge advocate of his since before the draft, but to say that today he already definitively holds more value that Duchene is jumping the gun a bit. Draisaitl is playing in one of the most potent offenses in the league and on one of the league's top power plays, that inflates his production and in fact, almost half (14) of his 31 points this year have come on the PP. That's a bit of an outlier and not likely a good long term representation of his play at this point in his career. Meanwhile, Matt Duchene has been one of the league's elite even strength point producers for several years, despite many of those years playing on a dogshit team with poor scoring and very little support and is still young and in his prime. So while Draisaitl is playing with the likes of RNH or McDavid, or Eberle or Hall, Duchene has spent the bulk of these last few years playing with guys like Rene Bourque, Max Talbot, and Blake Comeau. It's been ugly for him. His value is basically Taylor Hall's.

Now all that said, I don't have a HUGE problem with the value here. I feel that it is "a bit" off. Once you take into account team needs it's a terrible deal for the Avs.

With that said, would you take it if Nurse is thrown in?

This is a tricky deal and I actually think it helps both parties a bit. I think Draisaitl > Duchene. It's not a landslide, but the more he plays the further it gets. Draisaitl does more of the "Meat and Potatoes" work. Duchene is a slightly better goal scorer and plays like a scorer Draisaitl is more of an assist man first that can also score goals. LAST YEAR Duchene had 8 more points, but played 4 more games. That EDM team was solid enough to be 2nd to last in the league and doing everything they could to actually be last. So we have a large enough sample size to take out this year's PP. Draisaitl is a slightly better possession player. The real difference to me is the ability to play defense from the center position. BIG advantage to Draisaitl. That part is more sizable. I'd also say here though that Barrie is more valuable than Eberle. To me, Barrie probably isn't a top line Dman on a cup winning team, but this gives EDM 4 dmen that can rotate and play reliably. This is CRITICAL for any playoff run. It's easier to piece in a top 6 winger than a top 4 dman. To Mr. Lobster's point, the needs seem to fit EDM more so that the AVS, but the best piece is Draisaitl.

Hard to give up that one-two punch of McDavid - Draisaitl

It's definitely more interesting.
