Description
Most of these ideas came from the Athletic MTL TDL targets, of anyone has some other guys they'd like to see MTL target please comment.

To summarize my thoughts, MTL has Poehling and Caufield coming as far as forward help goes so I don't think there is any need to target a top 9 forward, they even have guys like Vejdemo and Weal that could potentially play 4th C.

The main need is clearly on defense, Chiarot will be back but they could still use one more good D. Ehkolm could really put them over the top but NSH would be have to be willing to take Byron back IMO to justify it from MTL's perspective. A more under the radar option I like is Kulikov, I'd like to see that if MTL can't get Ekholm.

  3. Struble, Jayden [Reserve List]
  4. 2021 1st round pick (MTL)
  5. 2021 3rd round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
This is my offer for Ekholm. It's the best offer I'm willing to make, it's probably not enough but that's OK. MTL really needs to consider that acquiring Ekholm means they will probably lose Edmundson in the expansion draft, which is a big loss as he fits perfectly with Petry, his steady game has allowed Petry elevate his game to Norris levels. If NSH takes Byron then this offset the blow for me, but there may be other teams out there that wouldn't be hurt as bad by the expansion draft if they picked up Ekholm and could be willing to make a better offer.

NJD
  1. Mete, Victor
Additional Details:
If MTL can't get Ekholm than this is plan B. Kulikov is steady defensively this year and owns a better xGF% than everyone on MTL, even Petry. The fact that he is Russian and would likely end up on the third pair with Romanov is a nice bonus. Mete needs a change of scenery.
3.
NYR
  1. Lehkonen, Artturi
Additional Details:
Lemieux playing a very minor role for the rangers this year. Lehkonen has also fallen out of the lineup. Maybe both teams would benefit from a swap? Would really like MTL to have a player like Lemieux so guys like Anderson, Edmundson, Chiarot, Weber, etc don't have to be the ones to stick up for teammates all the time.
4.
MTL
  1. Glendening, Luke ($900,000 retained)
DET
  1. 2021 3rd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
This is a worst case scenerio, as in Evans, Vejdemo, Weal, and Poehling are all tried first and it doesn't work out. Which I find highly unlikely, but still included it as an option. Would only give a 3rd if DET retains.

Vejdemo is having a good year and is at the age where he needs to get a chance in the NHL. His speed would be something different over Evans.

Weal has always been a good faceoff guy, the only reason he hasn't got a chance to play in the NHL this year IMO is because of his contract, benefits MTL more to keep $1.075M buried at this time, but at the end of the year this isn't the case.

Lastly we have Ryan Poehling, who would be wasted on the 4th line at this stage of his development but towards the end of the season this role could be his. Poehling is looking really good in Laval recently, if he keeps it up he could even play a top 9 role for MTL if injuries occur or someone else is slumping.

Caufield is coming too, so MTL doesn't need to do much for forward help, D is more of a concern.

Glendening @ $1,800,000 full value for Montreal's 2021 3rd round pick, Yzerman isn't wasting his time retaining on an already low contract. he'll use his retentions on players $3,000,000 and above. Helm, Bernier, Nemeth, Staal or possibly Filppula.

We'd have the best PK of all time lol, although lehky would get 4th line minutes 100% of the time

Maybe throw in a pick in the Devils trade.

Yes, I know I've read it before.

I was just trying to make a point... that MTL has Evans, Vejdemo, Weal, and Poehling who could all play 4th C so there is really no need to get Glendening. So this is my "the only way it makes sense for MTL" offer, I know if DET is asking for a 3rd and if they can get it without retaining obviously they will.

Best I would do is a conditional pick based on Kulikov resigning, would that work? If they can't resign Kulikov then they are trading years of a controlled RFA for half a season of a 3rd pairing D.

I heard that resigning conditional picks are not a thing anymore. Maybe like if Kulikov plays 20+ games with the Habs, a 3rd round pick is added

Really? That's interesting I was not aware of that, I'm not that keen on paying that high of a price for Kulikov, what I like about him is he could be an under the radar low cost good fit for MTL.

I still see value in Mete, although MTL has done a good job of devaluing him this year so far. If it's Mete and a 3rd I'm out, would rather just see MTL try Mete with Weber again as both have struggled this year but had success together in the past.

Good targets, although I'm not the biggest fan of trading young RFA cost-controlled guys like Mete for pure rentals like Kulikov. But this team would be the deepest in the league for sure!

Great work!

Definitely, for me it is either give Mete a chance with Weber or trade him... I don't know where he stands with the organization right now.

Rangers easily decline.

Lehkonen has essentially no trade value aside from being a rental because he's likely unqualified as an RFA.
