Quick is still a negative asset, you'd have to pay the Leafs to take him even at 50% retained. I could see something like Quick(50% retained) + Iafallo for a 2nd and Andersen.

Quick isn't a negative asset, especially at 50% retention. The Kings have no desire to move him and are quite content to keep him as the backup until his contract ends. He has been very good so far this year.

Kings decline any trade that treats him as such.

Yeah this trade is way too lopsided in Kings' favor.

You don't view one of the worst goalies in the league for a few seasons now, taking a 5+ mil cap hit with 3 years of term as a negative asset? I'm not sure what to tell you.

makes 0 sense to me, and of course its Pagnotta facepalm

I remember quick from back in the day and he was incredible. Now he just looks like a shell of his former self. At this point hes not much of an upgrade over hutchinson as our 3rd goalie.

Even at 50% retained I just cannot see it

RN Campbell is the starter, Fred (when he gets healthy) will be the backup, and Hutch will be option #3 (backup until fred comes back).

The scout was there to probs look at Iafallo

The 2nd is for the salary retention. Leafs get back Clague who is NHL ready and not a huge dropoff from Sandin.

His cap hit is only $2.9M at 50% retention. You apparently don't watch him play much, as he's one of the main reasons why the Kings are even competing for a playoff spot this season.

Thats a nice biased view. The real view is that he's earning starter money, has been pushed to the backup spot and isn't even doing well there, with a sub .900 save % and negative xGSA. You may not understand xGSA so I'll go into a short description. It uses the location shots are taken from and measures how goalies have done against those shots from the tens of thousands taken before them. Quick is performing under average when you measure where the shots hes facing are taken from and therefor the King's arn't competing because of him, they are competing despite him. The fact he's earning 5.9 mil and has 2 years of term remaining after this season is a nightmare. Yes. that is a negative asset and yes, you would have to pay a team to take that on.

It would continue forward the long-honoured tradition of the Maple Leafs adding washed-up former stars.

He's not earning $5.9M. His salary is $3M next season and $2.5M in the final year, both of which would be halved for whichever team traded him.

LA isn't looking to shop him. They don't have salary cap issues and like him in the room to mentor Cal. They don't have a NHL-ready backup in the system either, so Quick fills a need for them as a 1B and eventual backup. They won't trade him unless someone pays.

Here's a quote from Craig Button from a few weeks ago about the prospects of trading Quick:

Quoting: CraigButton
There’s a development sequence. Part of development is playing in those important games. I’m a big believer in return on investment. It’s not about Dustin Brown or Jonathan Quick. It’s about the rest of the group, and their development is imperative at this point in time. Unless I’m getting something significant or unless I really want to get rid of them, that’s the only way I’m trading them. I’m holding teams feet to the fire: ‘You want Jonathan Quick? You’re paying.'

So first his salary cap hit doesn't matter, its the money he's making, and then it does? You can't even keep on message for one post trying to defend this crazily biased thought process.

Beyond that, you couldn't even find an answer to the problem with his stats and you counting him as a positive asset because there isn't an answer. Quick is a negative asset to any team and if LA are going to move him, they are paying to do it.

Would be freaking hilarious if in the span of little over a year TOR acquired both Kings goalies.

I’d argue it’s Petersen that’s keeping the kings in it.

Leafs trading sandin for quick is like the kings trading kaliyev for dubnyk. I’m not arguing whose better just putting it into perspective how this might be the worst genuine proposal on this site.

Petersen is 6-6-4, while Quick is 6-5-2. The latter has a better points percentage.

Except they're not trading Sandin for Quick. They're moderately downgrading from Sandin to Clague.

Yeah the Kings-Toronto goalie connection between: Bernier, Scrivens, Campbell, and Enroth over the past 10 years is sort of bananas, if quick was traded for andersen would be pretty funny.

Not even close man. Clague is more than likely a bust. Drafted 5 years ago and can’t even sniff the lineup. Leafs have no interest in quick and certainly not at this price. Sandin is their top prospect and their best defense prospect in 10 years. If you think clague is good that’s fine just keep him.

What? Stop putting words in my mouth. I never said that salary cap or money don't matter. Both matter.

The cap isn't important to LA because they're not a cap team and won't need the space any time before his contract expires. The cap does matter to Toronto because they're right at the cap. This trade would give them a solid goaltending tandem next season while saving over $2M in cap space.

My mention of the money was due to your comment that "he's earning $5.8M", which he is not. Cash isn't an issue for Toronto compared to most teams, so that's likely not an issue for them either way.

Watch him play a game then talk to me about him being a negative asset. He has just as many wins as Petersen and has stolen just as many games for the Kings this season.

I don't think your proposal is unfair, but why would the director of leafs scouting go to a game where Cal started unless it involved another player who played tonight (er. this afternoon)?

What? Clague played in the NHL earlier this season and looked really good. He was sent back to Ontario because he's waiver exempt and they wanted to give Bjornfot a look. Bjornfot has similarly looked fantastic, so they decided to keep him up because they had more need for a defensively solid guy than an offense first guy. Clague is going to be a solid NHLer and is likely going to be the player that Seattle takes in the expansion draft.

Notice how you still can't talk about how the stats make Quick a negative asset? Got to keep going with your strawman.

I didn't say the Leafs weren't looking at someone else. I'm sure they are. Possibly at other players to include in a larger package.
