USA core plus Peety

Created by: monkeymo
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 22, 2021
Published: Mar. 22, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Move picks and dead money for something good, Benning going to have to fill some depth pieces for league min though. That may be hard

Flat cap for 2 years even with the new TV contract ($750M est vs $200M currently) means we need another cap guru GM in 2 years which is perfect cause Benning contract is up in 2 years. Beagle and Russel we can keep for 1 more year, then allocate their money towards Boeser's RFA qualifying ($7.3M IIRC) use the rest on another top 4 D. Miller will have to be traded the next year for cap reasons, but it will allow the team to recoup some young cheap assets needed at the bottom of the roster as Peety and Hughes will get their mega contracts ~$11M each (hopefully they develope in the next few years to that status, fingers crossed)

Additional Details:

2027 1st round pick (VAN)
Both of these picks are lottery protected, have the option to defer 1 year, top 3 protected but will have to be 2nd round this year + following 1st round next year unprotected.

Only way to get rid of the albatross contracts of these guys. Apparently, NYR was willing to move 1st rounders that weren't its 1st overall for Eichel.

Honestly, I get that it's 5 1st rounders, but there's no way Buffalo accepts that. An Eichel trade likely starts with a bonified NHLer (Miller?), your top prospect (Podkolzin? Hoglander? etc?), then a couple of 1sts.

Having the return spread out over 7 years is way too much of a risk. If Adams doesn't get back immediate help and prospects/picks, he won't be around to see the second 1st rounder, let alone the 5th.

Yeah I get the picks are awesome but buffalo needs pieces that keep them relevant now or the near future. If theyre waiting for 1st rounders in 3 years to make an impact might as well trade dahlin and reinhart and start completely over. See how the fans take that.

I just wish the NHL GMs were a little more bullish akin to their NBA counterparts. 1st round picks seem to be way over valued in the league except when its for top end talent, they rather trade for some 2nd line tweener and pick. CBJ did that for Nash, Buf did that in the O'Reilly trade, Stone trade (imagine had Ottawa just asked for a boat load of picks rather than 1 prospect) I mean we saw with Nonis + Gillis, 7 years of no impact 1st,2nd and 3rd round picks. If you think you have the core, go for it. For rebuilding teams, use those 1st rounders to trade for good players out of cap strapped teams. But yeah even with this many 1st rounders it wouldn't happen I understand. Though this year's first rounder is a lottery pick for the Canucks (Demko i love the guy but he cant play bubble demko all year).

Some where in between MLB GMs who trade boat loads of prospects who most times not end up being busts for the receiving team, and NBA pick happy trading teams. The NHL GMs are just not creative or open to a lot of contions/picks.
