Detroit Buffalo Swap on Draft Day

Created by: Spaceman
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 22, 2021
Published: Mar. 22, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Buffalo upgrades significantly from Okposo to Mantha. Similar money and term. Buffalo gets a good D prospect in Cholowski and gets two 2nd's.

Detroit gets a guaranteed top 4 pick which is turning into Power, Hughes or Brandt and downgrades from Mantha to Okposo to do it. This will give Detroit two guaranteed picks in the top 6 or 7. Detroit can draft both a Top D prospect with one selection with either Power, Hughes or Brandt and potentially nab Beniers or Eklund with the other selection to grab another talented forward. Or if Detroit's pick falls down 2 or 3 spots again they could even grab Wallstedt and secure a talented Goaltending prospect.

Detroit re-acquires a 2nd round pick they gave up to Buffalo for Ryan.

Very intriguing as a Buf fan. It would suck to lose a top pick but to get rid of that contract AND obtain 2 solid roster players and 2 2nds is not bad in return. I think Buf would consider this hard. It immediately helps our top 6

For sure buffalo should take this, anthony mantha check so many boxes for the sabres. He's worth the pick alone even it ends up being 1st oa.
And we get two picks, a left dman prodpect, and out of okposo's contract!

No, Buffalo just buys out Okposo’s contract if he doesn’t retire. Giving up a top 4 pick even in a weaker draft is not an option. Especially with Detroit not flipping first round picks.

Mantha's very good, but worth 1st OA alone is laughable. I think this is a deal that's good for both sides. Buffalo is more in need of competing now than Detroit. Partly due to 10 years of no playoffs and having a true #1C in Jack Eichel but with no supporting cast and no way to acquire a decent supporting cast with guys like Okposo clogging up cap space.

Detroit is more in need of securing top talent for the future. Walking away with two players of a group including Power, Brandt, Hughes, Beniers, Eklund, Johnson, Wallstedt. Would be a game changer for the re-build. Even if it means they suck again next year. Giving up two 2nds also sucks but I'm in the mind frame of quality over quantity. Having to deal with Okposo for the next couple years would also suck but to get a top D man and a top six forward 3-5 years from now. Yes Please.

So you’re saying Buffalo 1st + Okposo for Detroit 1st + Mantha? Why would Okposo retire? He’s still owed 8M.

Its cheaper to bury Okposo next year than buy him out, let alone replace him. Id rather have someone like Rasmussen than Cholowski, but this isnt terrible value

Okposo is hurt again. They won’t say what happened to him yet. For all we know he may never be cleared to play again, Sabres fans can only hope. If he won’t retire he might end up as a long-term IR guy.

I really thought Buffalo was going to be really good this season. I don't get it at all, Buffalo's winning % right now .276 the Wings finished last season with winning percentage of .275.

What on earth

Especially given contract the gap between Okposo and Mantha is like... it's actually hard to quantify... I mean it's just like cavernous or some word like that?

you are so off mantha is no where near worth a 1st overall pick. Sabres decline this. We would just buy out okposo

Weird. he's still shown on the active roster and not LTIR. Strange for a guy who may never play again.

.267 now

It really is quite baffling with Buffalo. So many talented players on the roster but can never seem to bring it together. Or they acquire highly talented players and then they just seem to ghost on them.

They don’t really have a complete roster imo. Look at their defense what stands out? Dahlin is nice but what about his defensive game? Outside of Eichel long term is a great supporting cast in terms of a playoff team?

Buying out okposo is more expensive then burying him, and you pretty much save league minimum so i see no reason not just play okposo, and take injurys as opportunities to give prospects a few games. But if you want him gone bury him not buy out.
As to mantha being worth a first overall, i concede i exaggerate, however 1oa picks don't do anything for teams that don't have players to support them, and unless they bust have to be paid. We have 20% of our cap in skinner and eichel. Dahlin, reihardt and cozens need to sign to there deals over next 2 year. by the time your pick is even going to make an impact we'll be broke, so do you think your going to fit 4 top 2 picks in your cap? And have a 23 man roster that xan do anything?. Too the sabre's anthony mantha is imo exactly what they need and im not sure there's anyone in the top 10 who will end up being a power forward who can make plays on the boards and get something done infront of the net.
So please for the love of god trade the pick, for pieces we need.

Okposo never playing again has nothing to do with his quality-of-life post hockey. He has already made over $30 million off the Sabres during the term of his deal. I would say he’s set to have a pretty quality life if he just hangs it up before he does permanent damage to his body. More specifically his head, because he’s had some serious concussion problems in the past and Sabres fans are legitimately concerned that one more bad concussion could lead to serious long-term effects for him. His refusal to retire at this point is actually detrimental to his long-term health, so it’s a lot more than just making $6 million a year. Add to that fact that he is completely lost out there, and clearly just hanging on for the money, he’s not doing the team any favors. If this injury should lead to him being placed on long-term IR it would be the best thing for him and the team. By all accounts were he to stop playing now he would have a very quality healthy life with his family to look forward to. The last thing any Sabres fan wants is to see him suffer another concussion and start forgetting his children’s names or something. Walk away while you still have all of your faculties.

Injuries during a career does effect your quality of life. Ask Johan Franzen who earned roughly ~45M in his NHL career and faces mental health issues as a result. There are numerous articles where he explains his daily struggles.

The way the statement reads is that you were hoping this undisclosed injury results in him retiring or LTIRetiring which would benefit the team and not necessarily him. The injury could be minor for all we know. If that isn’t your intention of the statement then we’re on the same page with the exception of him retiring vs LTIRetiring as one of them compensated him and the other doesn’t. That’s also under the assumption that he medically isn’t fit and not that he hasn’t lived up to his contract. I get it, Detroit has had its fair share of bad contracts which we’re currently riding out or bought out in the past couple years.

You’re also speculating on him holding on just for the money. If he truly had medical issues like you described he’d get paid via LTIR. I’m sure he’s fully aware of any long term effects of the damage his body has sustained and we’re not his doctors so we can’t even begin to speculate on anything short term or long term for him.

You’re entitled to your opinion of course. It’s been a legitimate concern of the Sabres fan base over the last three years or so. Each time he gets hurt he’s out longer and takes longer to recover. Up till this season he at least had produced as an effective 4th line player. Injuries have clearly caught up with him, and if the team were even marginally competitive I don’t think he would even be off the taxi squad.

I expect he gets bought out this off season if he doesn’t retire, or end up on LTIR. And with the Pegulas’ recent pennypinching they may be inclined to buy him out in order to save money even if he were destined for LTIR. Unfortunately I think that’s how the O’Reilly trade happened. They were fixated on not paying the $7 million bonus to the point of forcing Botterill to make the worst trade this team has made since they had to give away Hasek.

You can’t buyout an injured/LTIR unless the player permits it per the CBA. It also may be in the Pegula’s best interest financially if he was LTIR and the contract was insured (I’m not sure).

Mantha would be a great fit for Buffalo.
Cholowski development is taking a long time but he is a LHD taken 20th in 2016.
IMO the first round pick is nearly equal to unloading Okposo's $6,000,000 salary for the next two years.
The 2021 draft quality is predicted to look like the 2017 and 2019 drafts. The first two picks were Hischier and Patrick, and Hughes and Kakko respectively.
I would take Mantha over any of those four players.
Let me add, Buffalo does not have any scouts, so it is highly likely that they will mess up the pick (Reinhart over Draisaitl, Nylander over Sergachev, Dahlin over Svechnikov, need I say more).
Imagine this Sabre line up with the trade next year.
Skinner Eichel Mantha
Olofsson Cozens Reinhart
Mittelstadt Ruotsalainen Lazar
IDK who will be on the fourth line.
