Buffalos asking price for Eichel is revealed

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 23, 2021
Published: Mar. 23, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
According to Renaud Lavoie of Sportsnet, the Sabres are asking for some combination of at least 4 of any of the following in any trade for Eichel:

1. first round picks

2. blue-chip prospects that were recently first round picks

3. Young players that are playing like former first round picks in the NHL right now.

In this ACGM post, I dive into what such a trade for Eichel might look like.

The Rangers and the Kings are used as illustrative examples and I tried to create a trade scenario that could be appetizing for both teams.

I was mindful that the Rangers don't want to give up Lafreniere or Kakko.

I was also mindful that the Kings don't want to give up Byfield or Turcotte.

Any Eichel trade will have to take place in the offseason, of course.

NHL Insider Renaud Lavoie lays out the price he's heard Buffalo wants in return for their captain, and the need for the Sabres to make a culture change.
2.
BUF
  1. Iafallo, Alex
  2. Vilardi, Gabriel
  3. 2021 1st round pick (LAK)
  4. 2022 1st round pick (LAK)
  5. 2022 2nd round pick (LAK)
  6. 2023 2nd round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Because he's a pending UFA, the signing rights to Iafallo would be traded to Buffalo before July 1st. Since Iafallo is a Buffalo native, I can imagine he would be one of the few players in the NHL who would be open to playing for the Sabres.

    Kaako, Chytil, Lundkvist, 2021 first, 2022 2nd

I think the Rangers rather give Kaako over Fox

So the interview says the Sabres want 4 pieces, so you take 6. Makes sense...

He's like Eklund, except Eklund throws out random names as opposed to random picks tears of joy

You kinda missed the other piece of reporting as well:

    1) Rangers made a formal offer over last season.... and that offer didn't include any of Fox, Laff, Kakko, Miller, or Chytil. IF they weren't there then, they're not there now.
    2) The only teams Eichel is willing to go to are Boston and NYR and Boston doesn't have the pieces/cap to seriously get the trade done.

Realistically combine all these ideas together and you're looking at something like
    1) Schneider
    2) The Rangers 2021 1st
3 + 4) A 1st + Top prospect the Rangers get in exchange for dealing Mika to a 3rd team.

So really we're likely looking at a situation where the Rangers simply swap Mika for Eichel at the cost of a 1st + Schneider for the exchange.

The interview basically says Buffalo wants at least 4 pieces that are first round pick quality.

Because this year's draft is a crapshoot, a first round pick in 2021 could easily be worth a second round pick in another draft year.

In a trade like this, the need to have 4 pieces and 4 pieces only should not be arbitrary for either team IMO.

Eichel is getting traded before his NMC kicks in at the end of next season.

So whether he's willing to go to Boston or New York is irrelevant.

Also, Mika is not waiving his NMC for Buffalo.

I think the Rangers and Kings both decline. In the Kings case, they keep young Vilardi and their picks and then they still have 9m to spend a UFA.
Rangers, no way they trade Fox. But even if Buchnevich is a 5m player next season, the Rangers keep their picks and still have 5m to spend on other players.
As much as Eichel is good value at 10m, teams can still 10m on players and get good value and keep their young assets.

I mean I agree that Boston vs. NY is irrelevant to Eichel. The point is that it's not a truly open market. It's limited to a couple teams. So it's not like there's a bidding war. Boston really only has late 1sts to deal. Beecher likely isn't going to cut it... They don't seem like a serious contender.

And yeah I know Mika isn't going to Buff... hence why "to a 3rd team" was included.

From the Rangers perspective, they can't afford to keep both Mika and Eichel so basically any Eichel deal is going to involve dealing Mika to a 3rd team a la Turris' role in the Duchene to Ottawa deal.

Wait so let me get this straight they ask for 4 1sts (no team will give that much up) u then proceed to give up wayyyyy more than 4 1sts. Plus they are rebuilding so this makes no sense. Good job!

I legitimately think Adam Fox will have a better career than Eichel. He does it all. Moving someone of that caliber for a disgruntled player doesn't make sense to me

That asking price is from Buffalo's front office. It's not me asking for it.

If it's salacious enough, I make an ACGM post about it.

1sts from different draft years aren't of the same value.

Also, your ilk is suggesting to swap out Fox with Kakko, so at least we're in the same ball park smile

If you think the Rangers are rebuilding, you don't even know what a rebuild looks like.

Just look at Buffalo or Ottawa.

It appears as if in the event that Fox was swapped out for Kaako, that the Rangers would be more likely to accept.

So, maybe an Eichel trade could get done with the Rangers.

    IDK

The Rangers in my ACGM post are nothing more than an illustrative example.

    Nothing more.

Lol exactly. Why would Lavoie have insider knowledge on such a big deal, that no one else in the hockey world would have?

Either way, Buffalo wanting top picks and prospects for Eichel isnt exactly insider knowledge. I could have told everyone that a while ago.

just a quick point, buffalo is sucking not rebuilding, we rebuilt 3 years ago. As it turns out rebuilding a bad team makes a bad team. We should try just building.

I know but the same scenario is true for all teams. Teams can spend 10m on a UFA or two and keep their young assets and picks. As a result I think no team is going to offer as much as you posted.

I really think you should reword the 4 former 1st round picks as Montreal could literally offer Price, Weber, Drouin and a 2021 1st and it would qualify as a legitimate offer by the stated standards. Not that Buffalo would accept it or Montreal would offer it, just saying I can see fans on here offering that over and over again LOL.

Yeah the notion that Eichel gets to pick and choose where he wants to go is ridiculous- he’s under contract, and that contract doesn’t contain a NMC until a few years down the road. He’s fair game to be dealt anywhere

Awful Los Angeles deal. I don't believe Adams is asking for that many first rounds. I do not believe this information, especially since it was completely different before and Marek confirmed it or at least did not refute it.

The first in 22 and 23 are appealing, the firsts in 21 are less so. The only adavantage to 21 firsts is that they are sooner and you can kinda ballpark where they might end up. I genuinely hate lists like this, where you tick off things that dont fit but meet the criteria. Not all drafts are equal, not all former firsts are all stars in the making, not all prospects are equal. Lists are dumb. What makes sense?
