Why waive Wolanin

Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 23, 2021
Published: Mar. 25, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Waiving of Wolanin could mean: (1) Ottawa has an extension deal with LD Mike Reilly? (2) Sanderson is coming out this year? (3) Ottawa intends to sign LD Mikael Wikstrand after the KHL season is over? (4) they have enough offensive LDs, and want a defender? and/or (5) they need reinforcements in Belleville?

Lol I wouldn't hold my breath on Wikstrand. Love Bryan Murray but he burned that bridge hard. He can go anywhere he wants this summer if I'm not mistaken, and Ottawa won't be on that list.

My guess is they just don't see him as part of the future. He needed to play another 16 games or something for Ottawa to retain RFA rights and that wasn't going to happen with DJ. Bad asset management, but I don't think it will hurt them in the end. His development really went bad right away. He played incredibly for them out of College, and he should have played instead of Max Lajoie in 18-19. Then the shoulder injury wiped out his whole 19-20 season. He basically lost two full years of what could have been NHL development, and he never fully recovered. Still think there's enough there for him to salvage and NHL career, though I don't think he'll ever reach the top 4 heights it looked like he would. Gonna keep rooting for him, because he's a wonderful guy.

Not a good enough reason when J.Brown, Coburn and Gudbranson stick around. All 4 are bad defensively, but Wolanin can at least skate and move the puck up ice.

Is he in the same sort of boat as Djoos, Bowey or another depth defenceman that has some offensive upside but will likely bounce around a good bit? Are those fair comparables?
