MTL
  1. Ryan, Derek
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Not as bad as it seems for MTL. Both players have roughly the same PPG. The Flames get their right-shot middle six forwards and add a pick because Armia holds more value if re-signed. The Canadiens get their bottom-six, faceoff-winning center if Evans continues to struggle.

They'd be fools if they didn't. They already tried to waive Ryan...no one was interested.

I think it's not that they were not interested, it's just they couldn't take him without sending some cap back.

Even if we were able, I think he's gone regardless.

you cant treat waivers the same this year as you would every other year. in a flat cap world no one is taking on ryan over 3 million without moving money out, thats just silly.

i think calgary would do that at this point, they love ryan and hes a perfect sutter guy i wouldn't be surprised to see him back next year on a 1 or 2 year deal.

I think the Canadiens could explore better options. Luke Glendenning or Derek Grant are better options.

Even if you have a point, doesn't change the fact that it's a very favorable deal for the Flames, and Habs could do better than this.

Not really. Both Glendening and Grant are negative impact based on xSPAR this season.

Most likely true, but I don't think anyone would have taken him regardless even if he was twice cheaper.

I love me some Derek Ryan and he's the kind of guy a lot of winning teams have, he plays great in his own end, wins a ton of draws and kills penalties at nearly an elite level. I'd be hard pressed to send a third along with it, if teams were willing to negotiate the pick or even send a 5th back to Calgary I would have a lot more interest.

Armia himself as a UFA is probably worth a 3rd. In the trade above we get the 3rd and a guy who's exactly what we need.

Come on, Derek Ryan is solid even if he's not the sexiest player to have on your roster.

I'm not that sold on the guy, but I haven't seen him play that much. Call it a preliminary reaction to a waivers bound 4C - even if it was mostly for cap reasons.

Certainly wouldn't be surprised if he proved me wrong though, but doesn't seem like he gets the chance in Calgary.

Might be a tad biased regarding Armia, but imo he's worth at least a 2nd. Imo he's an underrated mid-6 asset with great PK abilities.

Waivers are not really a good indications this year, as useful but expensive players like Perreault, Henrique, Ryan have been put on there. I don't think it's your opinion of Ryan that makes you think the trade is lopsided, but you overrating Armia maybe?

Very possible. I tend to believe more than others of my fellow Finns.

I don't dislike him, but he's getting closer to overrated than underrated. He's a inconsistent player who seems to lack will & effort by times. Not bad, but nothing wow either. I feel like he's gonna be overpaid this offseason and I wouldn't want my team to participate in that bidding war.

There's 0 reason for Calgary to do this because Armia is a UFA. Why would we give up a 3rd for Armia when it looks like we're not even making a push. Plus Ryan is very effective at what he does. If calgary is still making a push, we can't afford to lose him.

Derek Ryan is also a UFA. The 3rd is because Armia has more long-term value if re-signed.

In a normal year probably but we can't protect Armia so it makes no sense to spend draft capital on him.

I'm not saying Armia isn't worth the third but why would Calgary give up a third for Armia for the rest of the season when our season is pretty much over. Calgary are most likely sellers. They're both UFA's so they can resign wherever they want after this year. If Calgary really wants Armia we can go after him as a UFA. There is 0 point for Calgary to spend a third on Armia before TDL unless they were trying to make the playoffs this season(which they most likely won't be). Why would Calgary spend a third to target a Rental when they are not even going to make playoffs.

OlegP glad your phil-101 class paid off. Too bad you misapplied the term here. I'd tell you to give your head a shake but you can't afford to risk losing any more brain cells.

Because they play on bad teams that have poor defending.
