Here's the problem with this theory. IF toronto wins the 2015 lottery and picks mcdavid they dont get Mitch Marner. Now that they have mcdavid, they probably dont get Matthews since they wont be as bad.

No, my counterpart by the same name is not comparing the two. Hes doing a "what if" post. What if the leafs got the 1OA pick in 2015 instead of the 4OA pick. If we got mcdavic we wouldve been a better team and probably not won the 1st OA pick in 2016, meaning we lose both Marner and Matthews but gain McDavid.

I don’t see the leafs signing tavares if they had gotten mcdavid then matthews the following year. If they had gotten mcdavid they maybe don’t even get matthews. Fun concept

It's a what if the Leafs won the draft lottery instead of Edmonton the year they were drafted. Everyone knows McDavid is the best player in the world.

Its very surprising to see the number of people who failed to read the title. This wouldn't work out exactly as predicted though. Let's say the Leafs win the lottery in 2015 and get McDavid, 2016 comes and McDavid is out with his collarbone so the Leafs still end up getting the 1st Overall pick (back-to-back years) and draft Matthews. 2018 Summer comes and the Leafs switch their target from John Tavares to Erik Karlsson who they end up trading 2 1sts, Nazem Kadri, and Timothy Liljegren. Karlsson falls off in production, the Leafs and their brutal fanbase rips him apart and he is traded to San Jose in exchange for Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Chris Tierney, and a 1st round pick. This first round pick of 2020 from San Jose becomes the 3rd overall pick. With Lafreniere and Byfield off the board and the Leafs with a new defenseman in Vlasic, they select Tim Stutzle. Nylander is traded for Brett Pesce to balance out the roster. A hall of fame line of Stutzle, Matthews, and McDavid reigns terror over the NHL while Rielly, Pesce, Vlasic, and Muzzin run the defense corps.
