So, in recent rumors, the leafs may be shopping Freddie? I happened to watch DownTown Sports on youtube and he discussed how moving Freddie this deadline could actually benefit the leafs. The way he put it was if Freddie ends up on the LTIR longer than anticipated, it would be a good time to move his contract as it would free up cap space (duh) and also because the leafs would then know that "ok, so we don't got freddie for a while, so who would be a servicable backup for Campbell? or, someone who can split starting roles with Campbell?"
So, IMO, Georgiev can be that serviceable goalie, as this guy can be potential starter, and comes cheap. The Rangers may A) not move him because they're pushing for a playoff spot, or B) they choose to move him to have the opportunity to fight for a starting role and not worry about paying for him after his contract expires, because he could very may well do well and could be up for a raise, and with Shestirkin assuming the starting role rn in NY, and putting up great numbers, he too is well due for a raise.
Now, with Freddie, Carolina is the best team for his service, as Reimer and Mrazek are "meh" and not goalies I would nessecarly trust if CAR does make a deep run. Solidifying your depth with Freddie can be an insurance claim for CAR as they would have extremely good depth in Goalies come playoff time, in case one were to go down with an injury. On top of that, TOR can add a top 6 depth piece in Fluery and would not have to worry about him being taken by Seattle come the expansion draft, and you can easily snag a nice B-C level prospect in Geekie and see how he does (I included Geekie bc the chances of TOR losing a top prospect at the deadline is looking high, so getting a mid-tier prospect could save TOR a bit of depth in their prospect pool). I also included Nedeljokivic because he too is young and expansion exposal so when the expansion draft does come, the Leafs won't have to worry so much about Kerfoot being taken as Seattle may look for other options out of the Leafs system.
Luke Glendening seems to be attracting more interest from Florida rather than Toronto, but just out of spite, I figure I'd add a potential deal that could bring Glendening to TOR. Detroit is asking for a 2nd round pick for Luke, so give them that and serviceable player in Engvall to fill the void on the 4th line center position.
Palmieri is a player that I believe TOR could target. He's a goal scorer and on a pretty decent contract, if you were to make these moves. Other than that, to get Palmieri without making these moves (i.e. Freddie getting dealt) you may have to look at a third team to retain some salary.
I keep adding Oleksiak to my Arm-chair GM posts because I don't think TOR is up there now for the Ekholm sweepstakes, but I still feel that an upgrade on their top 6 is needed, and why I think that is because we have already seen enough of Dermott and what he can do, and on the top 6, he doesn't seem to be getting up to bis full potential, so allowing him to be moved to find a team where he can slide into a top 4 role can benefit him, even if he doesn't stick in Dallas. Oleksiak id a 6'7 250 pound beast that would be an upgrade over Bogosian, and can be a threat on the back end for the other teams offence, like slowing the other team down with his physical force and size and keeping the puck from getting deep in our zone. He is not an Ekholm, but IMO, he can be the cheaper version of Ekholm.
I do realize that these Trades may never happen, but It is fun to fantasize what your favourite could do to improve their roster. I highly doubt any of these moves will happen, but these moves could really help Toronto get out of a financial pickle from the 40 mil dumped in 4 players on their team.
Canes say no. I definitely think Fleury is a piece that we could be looking to move, and I'm not a huge fan of Geekie. But Ned has a bright future and he is finally living up to his potential and playing great. A few years of an aging Freddy Andersen is not worth the price we're giving up. We're also not trading Ned. If we give up a goalie, it'll be Reimer.
Nobody is giving up 3 good prospects and a third for half a season of Freddie. Take out all the prospects and you might be able to get a 2nd for Freddie but that's the best they'll get.
NJD and DET trades have too much value leaving the Leafs. LGD is not worth a second rounder. Palmeri is valued at a second and a B rated prospect likely. Hallander and Abrusezze make sense but not a first round pick. I really like the other deals though.
I disagree. Engvall is a pure cap dump and has another year on his deal. He's terrible. Also, that is a late 2nd and if we retain on LGD, then that's one of the larger contracts we can't retain on.
Remove the retention on LGD and we'll eat the salary of Engvall next season, as an offset to bump the 3rd that LGD would get us straight up, up to a 2nd. Otherwise, no deal.
