“ Canucks will buy out Byron in the off-season. I looked up his buyout on the calculator, and it is super team-friendly”

I could be wrong as I’m not a Canuck fan but they’re going to need every bit of cap space to sign EP, Hughes, and Demko. I’d also wager 4.6M cash & cap isn’t “team friendly” for that return considering Marleau’s buyout was 4M cash and 6M cap space and returned a first round pick. The only difference is that Marleau’s (35+ contract) was one year vs spread over four years but was pre-pandemic.

For Detroit’s side, is the retention really necessary? We’re already taking on more cap and Ryan’s will be prorated anyway. Detroit will need those retention slots for bigger contracts.

For the Edler deal to work, either VAN keeps Byron, or they buy him out. As for the Ryan deal, the retention is necessary for us to meet the salary cap rules

If Edler is willing to waive we'd want a 2nd and we aren't taking a cap dump back
