Description
I think next year Romanov is playing on the left side and Fleury gets promoted to right side. He is more of a 3rd pairing. Up front, Danault is playing so well as of late but if you keep him, it costs you more and Poehling is in Laval for another few years. Poehling is not a 4th line Centre. At the NHL level he is a 2nd or 3rd line Centre. With Suzuki and KK both established he would be a cheaper fit than Danault on 3rd. I admit Danault is looking pretty darn good at +17 and Suzuki at -2, then add the faceoff's and you have an argument to keep him. If you go that route, it delays Poehling and Tatar must go. If you can move Byron with his contract then do that as well. But twice on waivers and ignored tells me, it is his contract and nothing else, because he does have value. One can argue if the pick value is high enough but I went conservative.

“ Poehling is not a 4th line Centre. At the NHL level he is a 2nd or 3rd line Centre “
That’s optimistic as he hasn’t shown that yet.

Is the Danault return at the TDL? Wouldn’t make sense to just use him as a rental instead of trading him away? If it’s at season end then his rights aren’t worth that return.

I have watched every Laval game this season and then again the next day as I am doing some scouting work. Poehling began the season very slowly and I thought MTL waisted a 1st round pick, but in his last 8 games he has been very noticeable, effective and much stronger on faceoff's. This is a projection for his career. He projects to be a 2nd or 3rd line Centre. For his size, skating, awareness. I am not implying he will put up a ton of points, which would lead him more to a 3rd line Centre, but if he had two offensive wingers, he could also handle the 2nd line Centre responsibilities. If Habs sign Danault, which could happen, then I see Poehling being eventually moved.

As for your other question, with the win percentage and the team that has been built, it is clear Habs are going for it, so Danault stays. I think for his value he still garners those picks even after the playoff's, should Habs decide to move him. He is a very good player. I do not know what his demands are in terms of $ and term, so it is hard to fully know. I am just saying if they decide to move him, he can fetch a 2nd and a 3rd. I know five teams that are interested in him. A good problem to have.

Poehling is an interesting prospect as I like his tools and physicality but I don’t see 2C unless he’s being carried by his wingers. Like you even mentioned. Does that really make him a 2C then and that’s assuming he continues to make strides in his development as 8 game sample size isn’t really a ton. I say the same thing about Veleno.

Can you provide one example of a player’s rights getting that return (2nd + 3rd rounder)?

for a players rights it is usually only 1 pick. You could sign him, then trade him. I would hate to see him go for only 1 pick, unless its a 1st pick for 2022 or 2023, which I doubt but I know there is interest in him. I also know Bergevin really wants to keep him, so we will see. If Suzuki could get better in his zone and faceoff's, this will go a long way!

2022 and 2023 1st round pick are high value!!! 2023 because of Bedard but in 2022 you still have a Lambert, Savoie and Wright which are all centers!

Usually it’s one pick and a really late pick. If you want a first rounder then you gotta shop him at TDL. He isn’t going to sign with Montreal and then be traded to another team as he’d just sign with that team and cut Montreal out. Why would he hurt the team he wants to go to? I mean hurt as that team would have to pay assets to acquire him.

what you say is very true but by the time MTL picks Bedard will 100% be gone. So, maybe a late 1st round. But a decision will need to be made. Of course things would help if Suzuki had a better faceoff percentage. I love the kid but his faceoffs are terrible. He won only 18% of his faceoffs in yesterday's game. This elevates Danaults value and pushes back a guy like Poehling.

I agree, but there is no question Habs are going for it, so Danault stays for playoff run. Bergevin has said he wants to keep Danault but at what price? it does not help that Suzuki is not doing well in faceoff's. Last night he was 18%. Hopefully he can improve in this area. I do not see Poehling as a winger, yes he is good enough to play wing, but I think at 6'2" and once he fills out, plus his skating is good, he is more of a Centre. So if you keep Danault, it eventually pushes Poehling out of the picture. So, it is an interesting file to follow.

Poehling is developing perfectly and will most defined be every bit of a 2c in the NHL. I have been following g his progression since his junior year. Kid is goj g to be better then 98% people think. He is a big game player as well just born with it. And if we trade with islanders bellows needs to come back him and poehling grew up olaying together. Bellows is a big lw power forward and they will form a terrific line in the nhl. Make it happen bergy call up Lou!!!
