Assessing trouba options

Created by: Nikolay_Zherdev
Team: 2021-22 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 1, 2021
Published: Apr. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming he would waive for some of these places, troubas actually played pretty darn well this season, yes he’s likely a mil or so overplayed but he’s 26 and isn’t an erik karlsson type deal where it comes out to be really bad. It’s just me planning ahead where if we get a guy like eichel it would be easier to move trouba so things would be easier down the line. These are hypothetical because yes he does have a nmc
Trades
1.
NYR
  1. Henrique, Adam ($1,825,000 retained)
  2. Manson, Josh
  3. 2022 3rd round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
Rhd is a need for Anaheim and rocking a right side of trouba, drysy , shatty would be real good and especially when you’ve got the talent on the left side in Fowler and lindholm. Could do pairs like:
Lindholm-trouba
Fowler- drysy
(Fill spot)-shatty
ANA
  1. Howden, Brett [RFA Rights]
  2. Trouba, Jacob
Additional Details:
Problem— prob unlikely that he would waive for Anaheim
2.
NYR
(As a part of eichel trade)— this ones prob pretty unlikely bc who wants to go to Buffalo
    BUF
      Trouba
      3.
      NYR
Thought of this as a potential idea if they somehow don’t resign Hamilton (potentially way to expensive). Carolina loves defensemen and maybe they would rock with him. (Gardener would likely be coming back in the deal for cap purposes)
        CAR
          Trouba
          4.
          NYR
Colombia picks up a biggg defensemen and goes into more of a Carolina type team with a lot of defense. Trouba plays torts style and with savard likely getting trade (and the fact that they’ve traded a lot of dmen) they could rock with a defense of:
            Werenski-Jones
            Gavrikov-trouba
(Third pair could be a variety of players
            CBJ
Trouba (maybe a swap of Georgiev and korpisolo are in this trade too?)
              5.
              NYR
              1. Gudas, Radko
              2. Strålman, Anton
              Additional Details:
(Something along the lines of this more things would likely have to be added)
              FLA
Trouba ( likely more unlikely bc it would have to be a this season deal bc of ekblad but Florida needs defensive help and they shed a bad contract in stralman. Not sure if trouba would waive here tho
                6.
                NYR
Not sure what the return would look like in this one and also not so sure the rangers would even trade him here but here’s another option
                  PHI
Trouba (somewhat close to New York so maybe he’d waive here )
                    7.
                    NYR
Not sure the package but the penguins seem to always be looking at defense
                      PIT
Trouba (who knows whether he waived he would prob depend if they go into a rebuild of not)

His bad contract and NMC would make it impossible to trade him

I don’t see many teams wanting to take in 8 mil for what he brings to the table. He’s not a bad player by any means, but 8 mil with a flat cap for a guy who gives you second pairing production isn’t a valuable commodity

why do we need to explore options to move him?

That contract would hurt like hell, esp bc we only "need" him for 1 year

Fit wise...there are probably several teams that could use Trouba...and his actual salary is less than 7M per the remainder of his contract. But with Bettman announcing a flat (or near flat) cap the next several years- I doubt any team will be willing to take on his 8M cap hit. If NYR are willing to eat salary- that might change things...but I wouldn't count on that. Reality is Trouba is staying put at least another 3 seasons.

And any team that thinks they can pawn a big salary onto Seattle- may have a taker there- as Seattle will have to get to the cap floor. But Ron Francis will look to extract a pound of flesh out of that team- to the tune of a 1st round pick (probably several) and then some.

Yandle + a piece for Trouba?

That would rely on 2 people waiving NMCs. I'm not the type to say "____ won't waive to _____" but I think it is unlikely for this to happen

                        A) I don't think NYR have any designs on trading him in the short term. If he was moved or asked to waive his NMC for a move at the earliest it would be 21/22 after all his SB money is paid out. his MNTC kicks in 24/25.
                        B) Trouba doesn't have sexy offensive numbers but he's getting the the tough assignments of the the other teams top offensive lines, he allows Fox to not get those assignments, especially at home & thrive on the offensive side of the game. Against the CAPS on the road who did Laviolette try to get OVI out against? Not Trouba. (this is not a knock on Fox but trying to show the overall value in a D core) Last season especially it allowed Fox & DeAngelo to play more sheltered minutes & focus on the offensive side of the game, heck those 2 barely played any minutes on the PK last year, & now Fox is looking like the complete package but Trouba's presence in the lineup is a plus factor in that progression. Trouba is like having an excellent Left Guard in (American) Football. Not a lot of stats to track & no fantasy value but you need one to win. Not saying he's played up to that contract, but the stats don't quite tell the entire story unless you watch this NYR team every night. He's also the leader of that very young D core.
Fact is, JT was getting 7 @ 7- 7.5 no matter where he ended up so, until the younger RD's (Shcheider/Lundkqvist) prove they can play in the TOP 4 & PK &PP, Trouba's more than likely not going anywhere.

Columbus isn't happening. We desperately need to patch that #1C hole; spending cap space and assets on a Trouba acquisition would do us absolutely no good.

He signed in New York for a reason and made sure he had a full NMC...he isn't going anywhere!

Fit wise , I like him in Florida

Pretty sure I remember hearing Trouba bought a condo in Florida when he was still with the Jets.

Fort Lauderdale, is his offseason residence, his wife is in her last year of Medical School down there & probably for tax reasons.
                        NYC is the likely/probable destination for her medical residency as it was reported when he signed his deal with the NYR. Another reason he likely won't waive that NMC, unless Mrs Trouba's plans have changed.;
