Palmieri and Wood

Created by: ForsbergForVezina
Team: 2020-21 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 31, 2021
Published: Apr. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Top 9 could also be

Wood/Barzal/Eberle
Beauvillier/Nelson/Palmieri
Bailey-Pageau-Wahlstrom

Not sure if NJ would trade Wood (and he's no Blake Coleman), but I could see him really flourishing as a nice complimentary piece with control, so he's a piece I'm really interested in, especially with the season he's having. Really hope it isn't blasphemous to include him in a deal lol, but he's definitely a piece I would consider moving if I was NJ, could definitely get a lot back for him, especially with the league seeing how well they developed a guy like Coleman
Trades
NJD
  1. Koivula, Otto
  2. Salo, Robin
  3. 2021 1st round pick (NYI)
  4. 2022 3rd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Koivula - Potential bottom-6 C/W, has some skill and size, but still learning how to use it. Pretty close to being a full time NHLer

Salo - Potential top-4 two-way defenseman. Having a great year in Sweden and could be ready for top-6 minutes next year. Would really hate to lose him

That’s an overpay IMO - wood is a good player, but more of a 4th liner.

He's flourishing now!
I don't really see it as over payment
I consider you had Salo and the first for Palms, which could be argued but not crazy
Then Koivula and a third for Wood is not enough. He brings too much to us to give it up for that pkg

I feel like this year he'll be worth more than he would've been a year ago. I think a 3rd line of him, Pageau and Wahlstrom would be something special and he even has the speed to keep up with Barzal and Eberle. He transitions well and drives the net, which is something we could definitely use more of and even his defense has improved a lot since last year.

He's an RFA at the end of his deal, which still has one more year, so I think he'd be a hard piece to pry away, but the upside is that we'd potentially have at least two more years of control over him.

If we're breaking it down like that, I actually was thinking Koivula, Salo and the 3rd for Palmieri and the 1st for Wood. Salo would be the centerpiece - I think he's more valuable at this point than a 1st round pick this year, especially one that looks like it could be pretty late and like I said, he could be in the NHL as soon as next fall

I don't see the Isles doing it either lol, much too forward thinking. But Palmieri and Wood are two players I've grown to like and this is what I would give up for them

I see your point , but his underlying numbers are brutal. The reason why he’s above replacement level this season is because he’s finishing his chances , whereas he was one of the worst finishers in the league from 2017-20. I don’t buy that he’s all of a sudden a good finisher, I just think he’s gotten a bit lucky. No doubt he brings speed and grit and he definitely passes the eye test, but I wouldn’t even give up Salo alone for him.

I’m not opposed to trading the 1st, but it has to be for proven top 6 players like garland, terry, mantha etc..

His shooting percentage is a bit high, yeah. I've just always thought there's more to him than he's shown so far. We know he has the tools but hasn't really been given the opportunity to play with players who will allow him to use those tools (played a lot with Zajac and McLeod this season and last). But that said, a 1st is a lot to give up for what might be a glorified reclamation project. So I get it

Yeah i wouldn’t hate it if they acquired wood - I just think the price is high. He definitely seems like a trotz player and tbh it would be a welcome change if they went for cost controlled wingers instead of washed up vets. I just think the 1st rd pick should be used for proven top 6 wingers
