You know Lehkonen have POSITIVE value
If we get Dunn it’s for picks and Weal, no roster players
Retain half Dunn salary, take Weal and call it done

The 4th place for the playoffs is there for the Blues. They are underwhelming but to me they'll look for a hockey deal with Dunn, not for picks or prospects.

Also switch Lehko with Byron, the latter has negative value not the former

Montreal is not paying to trade a player other teams would pay for. Would the Blues pay to get rid of Sanford because they need cap space? No, that is because it is a ridiculous notion to pay to move a player that has value elsewhere. Montreal would do Poehling for Dunn straight up (not that I am suggesting that would be fair value, you just said that the deal was Poehling for Dunn) and move Lehkonen in a separate trade before paying to move him.

While I agree about the term as being the reason the trade doesn't happen, Schwartz is a significant upgrade over DeBrusk. He'd actually fit in perfectly with Cassidy's style. Great 200 foot player and goes hard to the net. Better situational awareness to DeBrusk.

Which I don't think DeBrusk alone gets Schwartz an extension. Not sure what the make up value would be though.
