Laine

Created by: Eli
Team: 2021-22 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 3, 2021
Published: Apr. 3, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Is CBJ going to pay $7M to qualify him? If not, if he's a UFA, what's he realistically get? Maybe picking a high scoring team with a lot of good passers could help Laine get another good goal scoring season together and earn a big, max-term deal, at or above 7M?

Cbj is at the very least qualifying him and even if he was a UFA he would probably get 8+ on a one year deal

CBJ will qualify Laine at $7.5 million (his base salary this year) and it will probably end up as a higher number. Either as a 1-year bridge or arbitrator ruling.

It is the offseason following the 2021-22 season where it will be interesting if a long term deal isn't going to happen.

Stats with Columbus so far: 28gp 7g 7a 14p -10 4ppg 5ppp 0gwg 55s. It's not even the lack of points that I find concerning, so much as the lack of shots. Each season with Winnipeg, Laine averaged almost three shots per game. In Columbus he's below two. There is no effort. It's bad enough the team traded a #1C for him, but he just isn't playing his game for them.

I think he's traded by the deadline, and a lot cheaper than people are guessing.

Its not about the value on the Orlov trade (which is very acceptable), its the cap. MTL have about as close to $0 as it gets and will need every spare penny going forward. You'd probably need to take a Byron, Edmundson or Chiarot going the other way to make the cap work.

Seeing as your goal seemed to be moving out long term $ I don't think MTL is the best landing spot for Orlov moving forward unless it involves more of a "Hockey trade".

The only way Kekalainen saves his job is if he can salvage the Laine relationship with the team, which he could probably do with a new coach. If Jarmo tries to trade Laine 70 days after acquiring him, ownership would veto that and fire Jarmo as that would be an admission of failure and poor asset management.

Not happening, Columbus traded their number one center for him, they change their coach before they trade Laine, also if jarmo does give up on him there’s no chance he trades Laine without at least a decent pick and a top 6 center coming back.

Thanks. That makes sense. I'd love to see WSH offer, like, Eller and a 1st for Laine if it would leave them with cap space for Laine (but maybe throw in a defenseman and a checking wing to balance that out?). I'm not sure whether too many Caps fans would be okay with offering Kuznetsov.

I think Edmundson and Chiarot are good defensemen, but the post in question had one getting traded elsewhere and the other going to Seattle, I think? Agree that flat cap math is tricky.

edit: here ya go: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/435048

2nd edit: it looks like they underpaid all of their own free agents, but only slightly. It's not quite done, but it's close.

Disagree. Without huge payment I don't see Seattle taking anyone else but Allen and Vanecek....

Dubois was the 1C in Columbus but he's really not a 1C, so far he's been a mediocre 2C in Winnipeg.

Vanecek is likely traded as soon as the season ends. Could be pretty cheap, because part of the return for WSH is Seattle taking an expensive skater, instead of taking Vanecek. Or Seattle can make a deal where WSH gives them Vanecek in exchange for certainty that they pick an expensive skater. Either way. But if the choice is Oshie, Panik, Schultz, Dillon, or Pheonix Copley, WSH gets some cap space.

You're likely right, although maybe they decide to go for Cale Fleury who would be a young, inexpensive option. Or maybe Bergevin exposes Price instead of Allen.

I remember expecting Vegas to take Hudon last time but they opted for Emelin instead. Could really go a couple different ways.

Okay. Thanks for your help. I think Panik is still a potential top six power forward, but he spent so long in Reirden's doghouse last year that nobody sees the skill in his game anymore. This year, in eleven minutes a night, he's on a 21 point pace. I think if he gets big minutes again, he can still tap home a lot of rebounds, and finish a lot of good checks, but Gregor is also pretty good.

You may notice I didn't QO Lehkonen, so MTL can sign him back as a bargain bin UFA. Just kept him in because that was the offer from MTL and who am I to argue?

Lets just say hypothetically WSH acquires Laine. Do they let Ovechkin walk?

I guess it's been a few years since he had 20 g and 40 points but he still gets 150 hits and 30 points in a third line role, so I do think on a team that didn't have WIlson and Oshie ahead of him, Panik could play a bigger role and still score 20 goals. 25? No.
