Team: 2021-22 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 4, 2021
Published: Apr. 4, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Sabres:
- move Montour and Hall for reasonable returns prior to the deadline this year
- give up the pick that they get for Montour to get Seattle to take Miller in the expansion draft
- sign one UFA from another team, Rittich to back up Ullmark
- they fix their front office by adding Karmanos as assistant GM and Rutherford as a senior advisor; collectively they rebuild their scouting staff
- they sign an experienced NHL head coach
- they draft in the top 3
- they don't make the playoffs in 2021-22 but with a healthy Eichel, a young and exciting line-up, and with many good prospects coming up, they finish with above 90 points for the first time in a decade; also, they do this without being a Cap team as they have 8 million in cap space flexibility

Retain 50% on Montour and Carolina accepts.

    Colorado declines however.

This lineup is still not good. We need to get new faces in. The only players that are absolute "no's" to move is Cozens, Eichel, Dahlin, Reinhart. Too many faces that are not good. This team might be worse than this years

This team is miles off 90+ points. This team is worse than the current team, that second line is just awful

Thanks for the comments guys. A few points in response:

    - The Colorado trade is based on comments on other forums from Avalanche fans. Whether Sakic views things this way is another thing, but there seems to be interest there in getting rid of Compher's contract. At this point, Hall perhaps does not return a first; maybe he does if they take back Compher. For the Sabres, Compher's contract is not hard to swallow and he is a decent bounce back candidate.
    - This is not worse than this year's team. The young players will be a year better. They will have a legitimate NHL calibre coach and NHL calibre goaltending. Eichel should be healthy. Of course, injuries could happen again, but there is no predicting that.
    - The lines aren't actual lines. This is next year. Teams don't have 4 lines that they roll with for 82 games. This is a depth chart. Okposo could slide down or out of the line-up depending on how he is playing. Reinhart, Compher and Asplund could all find themselves on the wing at times with Mittelstadt, Cozens or Lazar moving to center. Youngsters not on the active roster like Quinn, Peterka, Ruotsalainen or the draft pick (Beniers?) could have an impact.
    - I admit that the 90+ points comment is likely wishful thinking. But that is failing to see the forest for the trees. The point here is not to commit to anything you'll regret later. Since before Eichel was drafted the Sabres have tried one short-cut after another (trading for Kane and Bogosian, trading for O'Reilly and Lehner, signing Okposo as a UFA, trading O'Reilly for organizational depth, trading for Skinner, signing Skinner to a ridiculous contract, signing Hall). It is time to be patient with what the Sabres have. No more quick fixes.

Who is it that the Sabres should be afraid of Seattle taking in the expansiond draft that they should want to retain salary and give up a second round pick? Miller can be serviceable for one more year as the 6/7 th dman if Seattle chooses to select someone else or the Sabres cannot move an asset.

Honestly I don’t know how he would fit but if that were on the table for COL they do it. Them and TBL imo are head and shoulders above everybody else and Hall allows for some crazy Line combinations that puts incredible pressure on opposing teams. The Avs fans the op mention are probably over enthused to be rid of Compher’s contract to add cap flexibility but realistically the Avs have a number of forwards ready to make the jump into the NHL in Kaut, Bowers and Newhook.

Well, the Sabres as of now need to decide between 7-3-1 or 8-1 in the expansion draft. Barring a trade, 7-3-1 would require they expose Risto, Jokiharju or Borgen on D. All I think they would prefer to keep over Miller. If they go 8-1 and protect those 3 D-men plus Dahlin, then they would need to expose either Mittelstadt or Olofsson along with Thompson. The Sabres might prefer to just expose Risto or Borgen. My view is that they would prefer to keep both. I could be wrong.

They will look to move Risto prior to expansion draft. If there is not a deal to be made then they expose him
