That’ would be a big risk letting him get to UFA. I’d rather be certain. Some team will offer him $4+ and he’s gone. I don’t think his dad is a factor in any way. This team would look very different without him and not in a good way IMO.
So your argument is to protect him by signing him to what, 4M prior to the XD therefore needing to protect him?
If he is looking to capitalize on his UFA, he wouldn’t sign here anyways and would therefore wait until FA if all he was looking for was a payday making your argument moot. This argument makes no sense and literally is a wasted protection spot.
I’m sure Chevy has an idea as to Lowry’s intentions and is planning accordingly. If Lowry is willing to come back at a reasonable cost, wait until after XD and sign him to an extension . If he’s looking for a payday, don’t protect him and let someone overpay as it would be evident he has no intention of staying, thereby saving a protection spot for Apples.
If you think we are the only team not signing players to extensions until after the XD, you haven’t been paying attention. Hamilton, Rantanen, RNH, Ovi, Getzlaf, all waiting until after the XD to maximize the protection spots. I have confidence in Chevys ability to get Lowry signed to an affordable deal in the off season.
