THROWBACK Old Hot Take from THN

Description
In the 2015 or 2016 offseason, I can’t remember which one, The Hockey News released their annual offseason magazine. In this copy, an article was included that suggested the Oilers and Blackhawks make a trade. The Oilers would trade Leon Draisaitl to the Hawks in exchange for Brent Seabrook.

The thinking was sound. The Blackhawks are always in a cap crunch and coming off of a cup win against Tampa, they need to do a classic Hawks move and dump salary. The Oilers always seemed to need defense and despite recently drafting Darnell Nurse and the emergence of Oscar Klefbom, a veteran, cup champion and right handed Brent Seabrook seemed like a match. Now with Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Draisaitl seemed “expendable” to the writers at THN.

I figured this could be a fun discussion for a classic trade proposal that I can never forget. Imagine where the two teams would be now if this trade happened. What would that look like? What does this tell us about our own stupid trade proposals?

Thanks for discussing!

Trades are always interesting over time. In the case of the Oilers just look at the Hall for Larsson trade. At first everyone said good for Hall to get out of there, good for Edmonton to get a solid d man and ultimately we all said Devils won. A year later we were stunned with Hall having a lights out season and Larsson being average. The trade looked awful for Edmonton.... 2019-2020 season Oiler fans were ready to dump Larsson for a 7th. And then we arrive to today. Where I honestly couldn't say the Oilers lost on the trade. I've always liked Larsson and hated Hall. So my bias is strong. But from a pure hockey sense I would say the Oilers won over time.

both teams kinda benefit; letting the blackhawks try to extend their dynasty. but, from the oilers side, I'm assuming that taylor hall would not have been traded for adam larsson in 2016 then, giving the oilers a pretty solid roster.

True, it would have looked good for one season, may have put EDM over the edge to get to the conference final (Seabrook was still a top 4, if not top pair dman that year). But what is wild is, IMO, Drai may have become an even better player/leader with the amount of veteran experience around him in Toews, Kane, Keith etc that he hasn't had on the Oil. So even with a better 2016/17 season for the Oil, would have ended up as absolutely terrible for a decade after lol.
