Thoughts on value of this trade?

Its either a 1st rounder or 2nd rounder plus.
I think cap wise we are barely okay here when keeping in mind LTIR usage.

Doubt Laughton will return a 1st or even a 2nd. He's a Coleman or Goodrow without the most valuable part, the remaining term and cost certainty going forward. Doesn't really bring much that those guys do on the defensive end either. He PKs I guess but spending about 40% of the PK time on one of the worst PK teams in the league isn't really a good thing.

We need much better.... We already have lots of 3rd and 4th liners. Not a difference maker trade at all. Why would you give up a 1st for that??

I think it's too much, but I don't know- he's a good player and I have read the team likes him alot and would like to sign him. But it's hard to see how the market is. Generally teams don't give 1st rd picks for rentals (leafs don't like it), but couple the fact that 1st rd picks seem to be valued less this year because of a pandemic-influenced draft, and the expansion draft (getting players with term probably costs you someone else on your roster in the summer), and maybe these guys do get first. But I still doubt it. He would be a nice add for the leafs though. If he does cost too much I would turn to Nash in Columbus. Will definitely not bring the same amount of offence, but could C a really good shutdown line.

Nash is out 4-6 weeks with a knee injury. He's not going anywhere.

Think 2nd+3rd is a good deal for Laughton. He's a physical mid-6 player. Kinda like Hyman that can play C.

I would love to resign Laughton after this, 3 to 3.5 million AAV should be doable.

Do you think that is what he might fetch??

Probably. Depends on his performance in the playoffs. But right now yes, I think he's a $3,5M kinda guy.

I would value him more highly than any other forward of ours except for Trevor Zegras. His status as exempt from the expansion draft makes him particularly valuable this year and this off-season. I think his closest comparable (for an upside) is Jonathan Huberdeau. Judging by Rickard Rakell's deal, I'd expect him to get $4 million for 3 or 4 years before the really big deal if he pans out.

I'm not sure we could get a 3rd back but it would be nice if we could. I think a 1st is fair value with retention. Overall, I like the idea of adding Laughton, however, I would explore the trade market to see what's out there (@OldNYIfan said we could probably get Rakell 50% retention for Lilly and a 2nd or maybe a 4th). I think there's a lot of good options, it comes down to price and how it affects other moves we can make.

Question for ya... do you think we could resign him and if so how much?

I like that you found a way to improve the team and didn't have to add Kerfoot! Honestly, I don't mind if he gets traded but we would then have to go and get another forward under contract for next season.

The price range sounds right too me. I would love to get Danault, but I realize that won't happen. I would give up a 1st for Danault 50% retained. What do you think of him if he was hypothetically an option?

Danault being resigned is unrealistic and also dont see Montreal agreeing to trade with Toronto.

I bet Danault is regretting not sign that extension Montreal offered.

Really 4 million?
Seems like too much to me.

What about on 2 or 3 year bridge deal.
Was hoping 2 million, sort of like Kempe's deal.

I realize it's unrealistic, just saying he would be my top choice for 3rd line center.

Most likely, last I checked he had 2 goals I think.

What would you think of Colingo signing for league minimum? Hometown guy to play as bottom 6 FW.

I'm not sure he gets what he's making now in a flat cap world and with so many owners taking a hit financially, but I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again. What teams do you see as a fit in the off-season?

Sure, if he wants to come here for league min in the off-season. He'd be a good pick up
