Do NOT Trade for a Goalie

Description
I know rolling into the playoffs with two inexperienced goalies is never ideal, but the reality of the situation is that we're better off rolling with what we've got. For starters, there isn't a clear upgrade on the market. Is Jonathan Bernier or Devan Dubnyk more likely to lead us on a deep playoff run than Samsonov? I doubt it. We've got two young goaltenders and a guy in Anderson who backstopped Ottawa to 2OT of Game 7 in the ECF. Both Samsonov and VV have shown flashes of brilliance this year. I don't think we have the assets to getting a Bernier or a Dubnyk is going to really help us win a Cup this year.

People will bring up the lack of experience with our two goalies, but they need to gain this experience some time soon. Are we going to pretend that we haven't seen inexperienced goalies win championships the last five years? Matt Murray technically won two Cups as a rookie with 13 games of prior experience, and Binnington won a Cup in a year that he was on loan in the AHL. By no means is it likely that Samsonov and/or Vanecek can backstop us to the Cup, but it's not impossible. And the only way they'll gain the experience moving forward is by going through it now.

Unless there's a financially feasible way to bring in someone like Darcy Kuemper, I don't think we should make a move for a goalie. I know that's not a super popular opinion with Caps fans, but I really think we're better off rolling with the guys we've got now.

i agree with you 100%. Let the kids play. ITs the Capitals though so we will find the oldest goalie available and waste a 2nd round pick

I agree that the names out there don’t seem like an upgrade.
The issue is that we’re allowing more goals per game then any top half team in the league and especially when Washington has the lead. A veteran goalie could help a lot.

Honestly, I think Vanecek and Samsonov have enough experience to be a decent playoff tandem, and Anderson (with a few more games to get into the groove) is a solid, solid back up option.

Calgary fans want a 3rd or so for Rittich. Not sure what the ask is on Reimer. There are definitely decent goalies out there with a little bit of playoff experience, but ultimately the team is likely to depend on Samsonov or, if he somehow steals the job, Vanecek, long term. They've each played in the NHL for a little while now and should be themselves in the playoffs.

Vancouver fans would love to send back Holtby, too. Wonder if they'd retain enough to balance Panik and a 2nd? smile Holtby wasn't great against the Isles, but he showed up pretty big in 2018. If he's healthy he might be a fun option, too.

been hearing jokes of Dubas bringing back Reimer and running the most likable and happy go lucky goaltending duo in NHL history should freddie go on LTIR

could u imagine Campbell/Reimer the positivity radiating from those 2 would be deadly lul.
