If Johansen for Brown is 1 for 1 then Vrana shouldn’t cost Brannstrom, Gudbranson and a high 2nd. Especially considering he was just scratched for 2 games

Thanks. Their loss. smile Both prospects are good, and the pick could be decent, but over the two short seasons Vrana's 11th in even strength goals, and he's 2nd on the Caps' power play in primary assists. I don't think Ottawa wants to add that much goal scoring at this year's deadline, but over the summer, I could see them making an offer.

ahahahahhaha

eta: WSH should definitely do Johansen for Brown as a one for one. They have too many LHD prospects as is. See my other response on why Vrana is not cheap.

2nd edit: Gudbranson has three points so far this year and is making $4M. By all means, keep him. smile

Ah yes. Let’s trade 2 younger players who are in a slump playing for a bad team for 2 older guys, one who is on a boarder line cap dump of a contract.
The jackets trade isn’t close.

If I'm the Jackets, I think I ask for Jensen thrown in. I wouldn't expect him to stay at a higher points/60 than Dougie Hamilton forever, but the Jackets' blue line needs a little more offense this year and Jensen couldn't hurt, might help.

Oshie's contract is risky, because he might not retire or get hurt by the end, and the cap might not start going way up again now that the NHL has a new cable deal with ESPN, but right now Oshie is the best player in this deal, followed by Kuznetsov. Could Laine and Domi bounce back? Maybe. Will either of them ever lead the NHL playoffs in points (edit: Kuznetsov, 2018)? Unlikley. Will either of them, in their careers, kill as many penalties as Oshie has this year? Doubt it. Will both of them together, in their careers, get as many hits as Oshie gets next year alone? I don't think so. He gets overlooked on a team with Ovechkin and Wilson, but Oshie is a perennial 25g, 50p, 170 hit power forward who plays in all situations and shuts down opponents' best players. He's a lot older than Anderson, and I could see Columbus wanting more in this deal, but if you don't tell me what you think they want, Washington will still make the playoffs.

Dude. I get it. Tj oshie is a good nhl player. However he’s 34. We’re not trading Patrick laine a 22 year old, potential 40-50 goal scorer for a 34 year old top 6 forward and a 28 year old top 6 center. I know how good they are.
These teams are not good trading partners. Especially if you want to reload. That is what CBj is doing. Why trade for 2 players who are in the middle of their primes in a retool. It’s not the value that’s off it’s the premise. No trade is going to happen between these 2 teams for laine.

More like the Jackets turn that down outright. We do that trade and we give up any hope of retaining Jones, Werenski, and our goaltending.

While I accept that the above trade isn't happening, signing Kuznetsov and Oshie's deals wasn't the reason the Caps didn't sign Holtby. They were still able to sign Backstrom, Carlson, Dillon, Jensen, Samsonov, Vanecek, Lundqvist, and Anderson. And I think Alzner left before the Oshie signing.

Don't want Laine, one dimensional. You see how Lavy feels about those kind of players.

Vrana is a 55pt guy, while playing with some elite offensive weapons (Ovi/Kuz/Backstrom). OTT doesnt have those drivers right now, and Vrana isnt the guy to drive it himself. Good accompanying piece, but not one that you build around.

Johansen would be behind 3 other players on the OTT LHD depth chart. He's worth less than the 2nd that OTT is putting up.

I think Vrana would help a lot but the main difference has to come from within, from development.

There's no point nickel and diming each other on the little balancing pieces of a blockbuster trade if Ott isn't ready to make big trades to improve.

I think this deal gets done if you change Brannstrom to Mike Reilly...

Brannstrom was the return for Mark Stone. OTT isn't giving him up for this meagre a return.

Stone is hands-down better at penalty killing than Vrana, but he's also just over three years older. Don't get me wrong: I hope this doesn't happen, too.

Rielly is having a good year, but the Caps have a good team with a lot of good defensmen this year. I think if they talk about trading Vrana, it would be about long term planning.

I mean, I understand where WSH is coming from in wanting a long time pairing. This offer doesnt come close to getting accepted though

Thanks for your feedback. It was basically a trade from an Ott fan. Clearly I changed the wrong details. I think building it around an NHL-ready LHD prospect makes it seem expensive to Ott and seem not very exciting to WSH, which has a few of those. Probably better to start over from scratch, with the main value in picks or in prospects at literally any other position.

From the comments of one of the many Vrana threads, Vrana for Brannstrom, 2nd, 3rd. My response was that the Caps have too many LHD prospects and would need to trade one for a forward prospect as a side deal to make that interesting at all. Since I think Brown>Johansen I took out the 3rd, and offered to take Gudbranson to keep money fairly even this year. But maybe Gudbranson has positive trade value even when he isn't scoring points. He's certainly good at defense. So that's probably where I messed this up. In that case, take him out. WSH plays TVR, or, if you want me as a Caps fan to like it more, build a whole new offer without any more LHD coming to WSH. They have Siegenthaler, Nardella, Alexeyev, and Fehervary about ready to play in the NHL next year. Johansen isn't far behind.
