Getting rid of players that do not speak french

Description
In this ACGM post, I swap out the players that do not speak French for players around the league that do in fact speak French.

This is under the hypothetical scenario that sensonfire is actually a high-ranking social justice warrior at the Office québécois de la langue française (AKA the Quebec Language Police).

If it is mandatory policy that the GM and Head Coach of the Montreal Canadiens speak French, then it should be mandatory policy that everybody else on the team speak French as well IMO.

Otherwise, the need for the Head Coach and GM to speak French is a bit silly, if not a serious impediment to the team's future success.

The language spoken in the locker room and with the players on the bench during game-day is obviously English.

I can also imagine that board meetings on important topics like the trade deadline or preparations for draft day are in English as well.

Of course, French might be useful for communicating with the fanbase, the media or with french-speaking colleagues, but it seems it is not used to improve the team's performance on the ice.

The Montreal Canadiens shut themselves out of hiring all the Head Coaches and GMs around the league that can not speak French and it serves as an unnecessary barrier to the team's future success on the ice.

Here is an article that reinforces my point:

Let me know your thoughts on this otherwise delicate topic and I'll see you in the comments :D

Let me know if this new team of French-Speaking Montreal Canadiens is better or worse than what the Habs currently have on their roster.

  1. Price, Carey
Additional Details:
The players on the Habs that do speak French include Philip Danault, Jonathan Drouin, Paul Byron and Joel Edmundson.

I was surprised to learn that Joel Edmundson spent 9 years in French immersion at elementary school and has a grandmother and a few other relatives that can speak French to him.

The one player I'm not sure about is Jake Allen.

He does come from New Brunswick, Canada's only bilingual province and has played hockey in french-speaking parts of Canada before.

However, I can't find anything online where he speaks French and the part of New Brunswick he comes from is predominantly English-speaking :(

Instead of trading him, I made him Montreal's 3rd goalie until there is solid proof on whether or not he speaks French.

In this video, Ben Chiarot was asked if he can speak French and his response is laughable.

    1. He does not directly answer the question with any honesty whatsoever. He could have simply said "oui" or "non". Instead, he basically says in French "Hello, my name is Ben Chiarot. Happy to be in Montreal."

    2. He needs to look at his phone to read whatever google translate spits out instead of looking straight at the camera like when he was asked the other questions in the video.

    3. As he answers the question with a seeming lack of confidence, he struggles to hold back a big smile, which is a sign he is a liar, liar, pants on fire :D

If the interview is supposed to be in French and there are French subtitles because Mete is speaking English throughout the whole interview, that's probably a sign Mete does not speak French :/

The requirement of speaking French for the front office is more of an emblematical thing. People tend to forget that originally the Canadiens were the Francophones' team while the Anglophones had the Maroons and the Wanderers. The team passes on some good candidates for jobs because of the language, but it doesn't mean that the pool of French candidates is necessarily bad. Joel Bouchard, Dominique Ducharme, both really good coaches.

Also, if you include Edmundson who is able to say a couple of words, you should include Kotkaniemi who has made some serious progress and likes to throw some French words and sentences in interviews.

After 9 years of being in French immersion at school and with half of his family being French, you'd think Edmundson would be able to have a lengthy but basic conversation in French at the very least.

What a waste if you ask me. :/

Languages without daily practice are often lost as time passes. I used to be fluent in Latin for some time, and guess what I lost a big part of it because it's not a language spoken on sidewalks. The fact that he has not publicly spoken French since he has been traded to MTL probably means that he's lost it.

Impressive amount of research and work. I was curious if Marchessault crossed your list or if he just fell through the cracks of research.

I looked at Marchessault as a substitute for Tatar but unlike Marchessault, Tatar is a pending UFA.

So, I went with Duclair smile
