Deadline COL

Created by: AZWings
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 10, 2021
Published: Apr. 8, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Doing something a bit different; swapping goalies and LD with an eye on the Seattle expansion draft. Nemeth is a PK guy like Graves but a UFA at the end of the season and thus doesn't have to be protected. This allows COL to get a backup goalie, near-replacement level LD and more flexibility in the expansion draft for their depth on defense Makar/Johnson/Girard/Toews. Detroit can protect Graves/Hronek and either Stecher or Cholo.

Many thoughts around Bernier for a 2nd (unlikely), a 3rd, or a 3rd + low end prospect. Nemeth? He's probably a 4th as a standalone.

COL isn’t moving Graves, even knowing they are likely to lose him the XD. I don’t think COL needs to revisit Nemeth though he would probably be a decent fit as the 6/7th dman for the playoffs.

Yep. @AZWings Trading away Graves at the deadline is addition by subtraction, not happening. Futures and picks, or it doesn't make sense.

Personally I’d rather the picks as I’d protect Hronek and Stetcher. That last spot currently goes to Cholowski as I don’t think there’s a major difference between the two.

This is an interesting concept, and I like the thought process of short-term upgrade for COL vs long-term value for DET. But I’ll echo the previous comments about Colorado wanting to keep Graves. Nemeth was fine with Colorado and could fill Graves’s role in the PK, but Bednar seems much more comfortable with Graves in a wider variety of situations than he ever was with Nemeth. I think they would rather risk losing Graves in expansion than give him up for the playoff run this season.

Yep, totally onboard with the comments. Graves>Nemeth; Bernier (despite last night's defensive meltdown he was backstopping) >Johansson. Just spitballing. smile
