Yeah, but it’s not good asset management for the Panthers if they don’t need cap space. You can argue about whether it’s good for Chicago or not, but it’s clearly not good for the Panthers, because they lose a valuable asset while getting no benefit back.

They don't need cap space this year. But it's a 3 year contract and who knows what happens in the next week, let alone 3 years. He wasn't needed and theu gave up little to nothing to do it. Who's a valuable asset? Borgstrom returned to Europe and want any value to them.

Conveniently Florida has 4M in cap space. 50% of a certain someone's salary...

Return of Mike Hoffman?

Well after this trade they still have $20 million in cap room with Toews, Seabrook, Shaw, and Smith on LTIR.

Even more, $24M

I know about Seabrook, but though the others would come back!?!?

This is pretty fair, people could argue that either the Panthers and the Blackhawks won the trade though.

Well they’re using $4 million of the $24 million they could be using. The Toews situation has been unknown to the public since the beginning, and all of Shaw’s concussions are extremely concerning and likely career ending. Don’t know what the deal is with Smith.

I'm surprised Chicago took on a contract with term.

Question is: For who are Florida trading capspace for?
Wish its a defender, cause see biggest wholes there. Wouldn't mind secondary scoring either.
Montour+ Granlund 50% detained? Couple off 2nd round picks.

Solid deal for both sides. Edge to Chicago for getting Borgstrom out of this, and I think Connolly will bounce back, so they do well. Florida doesn't give up much draft capital, which could be big for them to make a move/multiple moves in the next couple days. Wallmark is solid as well, Stillman for Carlsson is basically a wash.

Good for both. CHI gets an unsigned 23 year old not playing in NA who had one decent season a few years back in a low-level cap dump, and FLA gets the good end of that cap dump.

Panthers ramping up for a big swing.

(In all seriousness, still have some hope for Henrik turning into a contributor)

Stillman for Carlsson is a wash.

So this trade basically comes down to Connolly + Borgstrom + the 7th round pick versus Wallmark.

Connolly is a cap dump and does have term but it's manageable for the Hawks and there is more than enough room for him.

Connolly can still play in the NHL and with so many key veteran players on LTIR, he could be desperately needed down the stretch in locking down a playoff spot.

Borgstrom is a former 1st round pick and is doing quite well overseas.

Although he is not really a blue-chip prospect anymore, he could be a force to be reckoned with if he plays for the Hawks as well as he's playing overseas.

After being traded by Carolina, Wallmark has never been the same.

The fact that Wallmark is a 4th round pick from 2014 and only signed with Chicago for under a million last October suggests he doesn't have much upside anymore.

And the Hawks get a pick for the upcoming draft, which is alway important!

There is more to like here from Chicago's point of view than from Florida's.

I voted for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Like if you did too! grin

The Blackhawks win in a vacuum; Connolly has had good stretches and can salvage something out of that contract, while Borgstrom is a risk well worth taking. FLA did get some much-needed cap space and a couple of somewhat interesting pieces, though. Edge CHI, but I see the argument for Fair Deal.

I’ve always liked Borgstrom so I’m gonna give the edge to chicago. I also find it kinda funny Wallmark has gone to the Panthers two straight deadlines

Also, they will have his rfa rights for two seasons now... And they will likely not qualify him two seasons in a row. Poor guy! Hope he gets flipped again.

Toews could come back, but Zach Smith 3.250 contract is ending, and Shaw really SHOULDNT come back 3.9 mil.

Ok thanks I didn’t know for Smith.

Shaw was done before getting traded by the Habs (what a move by Bergy). But he is the only one who doesn't know yet and he is the one deciding...

I hope Toews comes back. I feel like Doughty and him don't get the love they deserve anymore...

I'm guessing the cats are gonna try to make a bigger move, because they have more cap space.

I think they may trade for Hall

I'm thinking Hall or Savard. They wanted Ekholm, especially after the Ekblad injury, but I highly doubt NSH trades him now that they're back in the hunt for that 4th seed.

I'm thinking Savard, but it definitely be Montour. I don't think they'd be willing to pay for Rakell, but I think he'd be a fantastic fit in FLA.

Chicago is selling cap space and now Florida could end up with a good player just by taking salary to make a deal happen. Cap space could be more valuable than draft picks right now. All veteran players going to a contender will need salary retained somewhere .
