This makes the Kerfoot deal look like a steal.

Seems about right. Not sure what ppl are complaining about? Whether Van should be resigning him or not based on where they are going is a different argument but the value of the deal itself is fair.

I don't think they should be resigning this guy personally but seeing as they did, at least it wasn't a bad contract. 3.25M for a career 40 point guy is decent. 1 bad season doesn't undue everything he did previously. For crying out loud, he'd be at his career average with just a couple more points this year....

1 bad season doesn't and shouldn't undo everything but it should play a factor in contract negotiations.

Just like Taylor Hall won't get as much on his next contract as he would have before this year.

Pearson should have gotten 2.75Mx2 imo.

Absolutely. I would have let him walk too but with that said comparing Pearson to Beagle and Roussell isn't fair. Both those guys were never worth their contracts. Pearson is. Frankly Ferland was worth his contract too but the injuries have just taken him out of it.

Roussel and Beagle are and always were 4th liners. Pearson is a legit 3rd liner who can move up the lineup and is worth his contract. I get the 3M+, 3rd line player thing but the problem was the other guys, not so much Pearson.

I agree with everything here except that Pearson is worth his contract. There a decent chance this contract could turn sour but very little chance that this contract starts looking like a bargain.

So much for trying to rid this roster of overpaid bottom six forwards. Pearson would never get this contract on the open market and he still has to pay Hughes and Pettersson, who should be signed for max term, but Benning will give him a bridge deal in order to afford all of his $3M+ bottom six.

Eriksson, Pearson, Holtby, Ferland, Beagle, and Roussel. When was the last time JB got it right when signing a 30+ year old?

Edler?

I still think the Holtby deal was a good gamble at the time. It was short term. It just unfortunately failed. But gambles should be considered from the time they were done. Even with it failing, you're rid of him in 1.5 years.

9 of his 45pts were goals or assists on empty nets...

No wonder his performance is down - the Canucks rarely have a lead late in the game!

Am I the only one who doesn't actually mind this? Dude had 45 points last year. Last year he had a career year, this year he's having a down year. I find it likely that next year will be somewhere in the middle, which would land him in the middle six range. 3.25 for a 3rd line player isn't too bad IMO.

Right, thank you, he gets a pay cut, only winger that meshes with Horvat, his shooting percentage went down this year to around 8 compared to 11 and only three years

Of course the deal could have been better. 2.75m would have looked nicer. So yeah its higher than i would have liked too but its a far cry from bad. Virtually every single comparable who was true UFA got between 3-4m. So this is right on par IMO.

There is also a number of factors besides logic at play here like Benning trying to save his job by not losing him for nothing and the fact that Pearson is close with captain Horvat, etc. Those are factors Benning is looking at that we're obviously not.

To play in Vancouver's bottom 6, the first digit of your cap hit must be 3.

Or the first digit can be a 6 lol

I'm curious who his true comparables are that got 3-4 million and if they are from this or last year?

Players have been super squeezed in these two years with the flat cap.

When you say comparisons is they based on his production last year in isolation?

The way I tend to analyze players is looking at three things: there most recent season in isolation (he's been terrible) and his last three years as a whole (where he has 45 goals and 83 points in 182 games or 20 goals and 37 points, so a high end 3rd liner or borderline 2nd liner), then total career and likely age progression (0.23 gpg and 0.46 ppg so not far off the last 3 years, and still in prime)

I'd actually say if he had a good season this year he should be pushing for 3.75-4.5

However he's having a ****ty season so then 3.25 is likely fair AND the flat cap so id say 3ish.

So in other words it's likely an okay to not great but not awful contract. But with everything else we've already discussed. Ew

Jim loves his mediocre middle 6 guys.

Stevie Y. paid his mediocre middle 6 guys 5 + million and somehow they still won a Cup.

Is it great? No. I agree. But its not bad either. Its basically what other player with similar values got. Im simply talking contract value here. I dont think Van should have signed him though but not because of what his contract cost him.

As for comparables signed recently:
Foligno 3.1
Kassian 3.2
Smith 3.1

Pearson is better than all those players IMO.

$6,000,000 = Eriksson
$6,000,000 = Myers
$6,000,000 = Edler
$4,400,000 = Sutter
$4,300,000 = Holtby
$3,500,000 = Ferland
$3,400,000 = Baertschi
$3,300,000 = Pearson
$3,000,000 = Roussel
$3,000,000 = Beagle
$2,600,000 = Virtanen
$2,000,000 = Benn

$1,000,000 = Spooner (buyout)
----------------
$51,500,000 = 12 Player Total

This list contains absolutely none of the following:

- Top 4 defensemen
- Top 6 forwards
- No 1 goalies

And you need eleven of them on your roster.

Ouch. Like wow. Benning is a horrible gm when it comes to signing bottom 6/bottom pair/backup goalies.
