Dubas acquires cap space for a dart to throw at the late-round board.

I don't think he'd do this if he didn't know wether he needs it or not.

Kind of smart I guess

CBJ gets a pick for someone who wasn't going to play anymore games for them

Tor gets a 4th line center that might be healthy in time for the 1st round.

interesting choice just wish we he would get healthy sooner as rn no idea how well he will work with anyone

I guess we want LTIR but than why didnt we trade for Dubinsky if we wanted LTIR space

Than again 2.75 on LTIR on top of Freddie going on retroactive LITR meaning another 5 mill. So 7.45 mill in LTIR

so my Guess Bernier + Hall may be on the way monday

So the leafs get a decent defensive 4c and expand their usable cap space for a conditional 7th.

God damn Pridham is a genius.

Cap is irrelevant in the playoffs, so I guess Toronto is doing this risk free. Columbus got a pick for a player who may never play for them again. Fair, I guess

He should be ready for the playoffs and it's clear Toronto doesn't need him now

Sure it is irrelevant in the playoffs, but this gives them flexibility for TDL.

true but would rather have a guy we can throw in now or in a week rather than wait and see for playoffs. That way we can see if theres chemistry and adjust our lines accordingly.

Nash dont get me wrong looked really good but man it just seems like one of those huh trades

If he were healthy this trade wouldn't be nearly as good for the leafs. The cap space is what we're after.

You got him for a 7th next year. If he was healthy, you would be paying a 3rd+. It also gives Toronto more LTIR room.

Likewise of Jarmo. To get pocket lint out of a season ending injury is impressive. You never see deals like this. Both these GMs look very smart for making this deal.

And LeBrun just confirmed Andersen is on retroactive LTIR, too. Yeah, the Leafs are maxing out their cap space.

true, now Dubas has the space to make another move and solidify the team, should have paid a 6th and god Dubinsky to than we could have added more oh well

But Dubas has shown hes ready and it cost him nothing

Monday will be interesting

Can you explain to me how adding an LTIR contract ADDS cap space?

That isn't quite how it works lol. You don't get to write off their full salary. Getting dubinsky wouldn't have increases our cap any more than Nash, and Nash can play in the playoffs

So if the pick upgrades if Nash plays in 25% of playoff games, that means he needs to play one game before the Leafs get swept this year.

Because they are up against the cap. Take their LTIR hit, minus their current cap space(something like 300k-ish?) and you get the LTIR relief pool they can work with. Nash + Andersen = 7,75-300k=7,45m they can use AS LONG as they have those two on LTIR, or until the playoffs start, when the cap becomes irrelevant.

E: Why this rule exists is probably so that cap teams which get hit by massive injury or injuries to their players and can still replace them.

Gosh LTIR is so confusing. But I think I understand a bit of why it adds space.

It's a bit of a doozy to try and take in, but once you figure it out it's pretty simple.

I always thought their cap hit just didn't count against the cap, in other words no cap hit or cap benefit, but LTIR seems to be far more complicated than that.

Yeah, it's the reason they traded for Horton and Clarkson too. It allowed them to go over the cap for the duration of those contracts.
