Let's break this trade down in a vacuum because at first glance from this trade, you can tell Doug Wilson's asset management is better than Joe Sakic's.
It might seem rather petty but wins are always important, no matter how small.
Back in October, San Jose paid a 2022 5th for Dubnyk + a 7th.
Now, San Jose gets Pateryn + a 2021 5th, which can be used one draft earlier, for Dubnyk.
This is what this trade looks like San Jose's perspective:
Pateryn + a 2021 5th + a 7th + 3 months of goaltending from Dubnyk versus a lone 2022 5th.
This is what this trade looks like from Colorado's perspective:
You traded away Ian Cole for Pateryn and then, you spend a 5th + Pateryn on Dubnyk because the Jonas Johansson trade with Buffalo didn't meet expectations.
I voted for the San Jose Sharks.
Like if you did too!
