I really don't get this for the Sharks? Are they still under some delusion that they're competitive? Because they sure as hell aren't and should get prospects at this point, or, for Dubnyk, a reclamation project.

You aren't going to get much for a backup goalie in this market especially if the other team doesn't need you to retain salary

Surely you could squeeze a 23-year old tweener player from that no?

Not sure why Colorado would have much interest in Dubnyk, he's been awful for the past 2 years

A subtle but very good move for the Sharks. Pateryn fills in for Vlasic/ Jaros and the Avs get a much needed insurance policy for their playoff run.

Very fair deal.

I don’t disagree that he’s not amazing but Dubnyks stats aren’t the story on how good he was for the Sharks. He was very good when we were garbage. With Jones playing very well and the team playing well now it makes it look like Dubnyk sucked but he didn’t.

Jaros hasn’t don’t very well and Vlasic sucks. The move helps the team and doesn’t really bring a downside and allows Korenar to get a NHL job. It’s very clean business nothing special tho. And Merkley isn’t ready for NHL time. So there is no reason why Pateryn doesn’t help

probably want to give Korenar or Melnichuk nhl experience and they get a 5th too
pateryn is just there so the avs arent tied up to the cap and he brings depth

Fair enough, I just don't get why they wouldn't maximize the future asset value on a trade and claim Riikola to insert into the lineup.

We got a 5th? The absolute most Id see Dubnyk get was a 4th with 50%. Here we got a 5th, 3rd pair help, and no retention on Dubnyk. AV’s got a decent back up plan for both their goalies but the Sharks got a ton of value out of Dubnyk. Sharks if anything won this deal - but I think it’s fair.

This is honestly a steal for the Sharks. Dubnyk is horrible.

at that rate the AVs should have traded for Matt Murray.
Who goes out and gets goalies with a below .900 save%

Ok, a few minutes ago, people were saying Montour is the worst. (He's actually great, but that's not the point). Dubnyk IS THE WORST. The dominos are falling quickly. The Canes NEED to trade Reimer NOW if they want to trade him for a decent price. The avs are out of that picture now. Still don't know why they do this. It's so funny because obviously they have Grub, but Johansson just got his first shutout and they're like "Taxi Squad it is for you" and trade for THE WORST goalie.

By almost every metric there is, Montour is pretty damn bad.

Let's break this trade down in a vacuum because at first glance from this trade, you can tell Doug Wilson's asset management is better than Joe Sakic's.

It might seem rather petty but wins are always important, no matter how small.

Back in October, San Jose paid a 2022 5th for Dubnyk + a 7th.

Now, San Jose gets Pateryn + a 2021 5th, which can be used one draft earlier, for Dubnyk.

This is what this trade looks like San Jose's perspective:

Pateryn + a 2021 5th + a 7th + 3 months of goaltending from Dubnyk versus a lone 2022 5th.

This is what this trade looks like from Colorado's perspective:

You traded away Ian Cole for Pateryn and then, you spend a 5th + Pateryn on Dubnyk because the Jonas Johansson trade with Buffalo didn't meet expectations.

I voted for the San Jose Sharks.

Like if you did too!

I mean fair for both teams I guess, Sharks are clearly just trying to tank now though.

Fair Colorado gets goaltending depth, San Jose gets a pick for a goalie that wasn’t coming back and a defensive depth

Explain - cause this evidently doesn't mean tanking at all. If anything its the opposite.

This has potential for AVs to be decent move and if it is not, what did they lose here?

Fair deal overall

Colorado turns Ian Cole ($800,000 retained) and a 2021 5th round pick into Devan Dubnyk

Sharks turn a 2022 5th round pick into a 2021 5th round pick, 2022 7th round pick and Greg Pateryn.

Pretty even deal but I have to give the slight edge to the Sharks for better asset management.

Can I say The Wild win? Cole + 5th for Pateryn + half of Dub's salary + 7th. sarcasm

Fair deal. Col taking a low risk gamble for a backup. SJS gets the 5th they gave up for Dub. Maybe they can get something (5th) from Pateryn too.

This is a fair deal but like Colorado needs someone better then Dubnyk, I hope Sakic knowns what he is doing, that roster is not gonna stay for long.

They lost the ability to get a good backup, but you're right, they gave nothing up
