What to do with Trouba

Created by: HOCKEYBOY448
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 10, 2021
Published: Apr. 10, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Do we buy him out in a couple years when we need cap space or sooner? Do we retain half and try to trade him? Is he even seen as someone other teams would want to acquire? Then the problem of the NMC clause. His contract sucks and is cost prohibitive when we've got great options like Lundkvist and Schneider coming up in the next couple of years. I'd rather bite the bullet and get rid of him to keep the cap flexibility, so we can keep all the young guys with the cap staying flat.

Id move him sooner rather than later even though he has played pretty well, but you would probably have to retain at least $1 Million. The big problem is the odds of him waiving his NMC are zero to none so we r stuck with him until its gone

Place him on waivers and send him to the Taxi Squad.

Honestly wouldn't mind if they did it. He's been okay, but you need to be great when making $8 mil. wish Fox would have that contract instead of Trouba, at least he'd be worth it.

That's why I feel like a buyout is what's gonna be needed, which sucks cause there'd be a few years of $4.3 mil of dead cap on the books, but I'd rather not have him.

I agree. If the Rangers want to stay under the cap in a few years, they have to get rid of either Kreider or Trouba. The problem with that is their contracts and NMC. No team would even want them. I see some ACGM trading Kreider or Trouba but it almost impossible. Buyouts on large contracts like these are very unlikely. The Rangers are in a tough situation.

I think if the team does decide to buy him out its gonna be at least 3 years away because I think that's how long Schneider is gonna take to reach the NHL

Ah. Didn’t realize he had a NMC. Just thought it was a NTC.

I think in 24-25 it turns into a NTC.

I could see a buyout in 2 years when he has 3 years left. That'd be the summer Laf and Miller are due. Might need to bridge them each for 3 years till we're clear of the awful contracts.

He's here till after 24 season, period. Then could be traded at 1/2, same with Kreider.
Which means Strome & Buch are gone between now and 23 for cheaper Fs.

If only the cap wasn't flat. Then we'd have no issues whatsoever. Otherwise gonna be a lot of bridge contracts over the next couple of years.

Never should've extended Kreider.

Didn't know Laf would fall into our lap. Hindsight is always 20/20. If they had taken Necas back in 2017 we wouldn't need a center either. Only issue with Kreider is the contract being 2 years too long.

With or without Lafreniere I don't think he was needed, that contract is gonna be an albatross if it isn't already.

That could be a possibility but they would want $. Laf is looking very promising so if he gets a bridge deal, Im not sure he takes it. I think the Rangers could get out of their cap situation but if Gorton gives another unnecessary contract with term, the Rangers might have ruined their future

Definitely premature to say that. Kreider's contract is only bad cause of length, if it was 2 years shorter no one would complain. Trouba is the real albatross.

Don't like the Trouba contact? How about D'Angelo at 4.8m. or the 13m in dead buyout money. Like many of the Rangers upcoming young players but Gordon and friends have mismanaged the cap.

If we didn't have Laf or Kreider, our top six would be Mika, Panarin, Kakko, Buch, Strome and who else? Our top 9 depth would be a lot worse without those guys.

Idk, Kakko? Sign someone, guys want to play in NY, not hard to attract talent there.

Those buyouts were the last remnants of the past decade and won't be an issue. DeAngelo is gone via buyout after this year. Kreids was signed before we won the lottery and was a must sign at the time. Hopefully they don't go crazy with Mika, Strome and Buch and we'll be okay. Or if the cap decides to ever go up that'd be nice, but that's 3-4 years away most likely.

So then we overpay a free agent. At least Kreider is productive. Half these UFA signings every year are terrible.

You're better off with Trouba at $8M then
Kreider at $6.5M.
