Basically, you're using draft capital to shed salary and set yourself up for a run at the Cup this year.

Kulikov is where I started with this; he just fits with the GRIT aspect Burke loves, and would be a great bottom pairing D, especially for the playoffs.

Wedgewood is insurance, but experienced and talented insurance.

Severson is to make the salaries work, but you're also paying for cap flexibility in two seasons as opposed to Matheson's 5 remaining years. We could use another right handed D as well.

For Jersey, I mean, you're paying for draft picks, basically. But, Matheson, while his contract is indeed bad, does have some good play left in the tank; he is by no means an empty cap number, just an inflated one. I've seen him make some pretty awesome plays this year, to be honest. Aston-Reese is a Staten Island boy and puts up decent enough bottom 6 numbers. You could see him being granted a leadership role as one of the older players on the forward group, and more of an opportunity for offensive responsibility as well.

Fitzgerald, the Jersey GM, might want someone else though, like Lafferty or Joseph. I'd say do it anyway. He is clearly somewhat familiar with the organization so that piece is somewhat interchangeable.

Either way, I feel like this deal helps both teams, especially the Pens in the short term.

Honestly in my opinion this is fair BUT the Devils will say no because they’re giving up Severson and Kulikov for Matheson and a 2nd rounder + The 3rd shouldn’t matter and even if it did the Penguins win because the NJD are not as good as the Pens so the Pens will likely advance a few spots and choose a better guy,
And finally, we have Wedgewood. Scott Wedgewood has been an ok goaltender who can provide some relief but isn’t worth a 2nd.
Unless the other 2nd was traded for NJD’s 3rd and the 3rd Pittsburgh has is to acquire Wedgewood that’s a different story, but overall it’s a fair deal where the Pens have a slighter edge.

Omg I typed way too much.

True, but the Pens won’t do it because Joseph is one of their only decent prospects.

Well if you're going to include Joseph, maybe take out ZAR. But even if you simply added him in I'd be alright with it; Severson is a better fit than Matheson for the Pens lineup for the next couple of seasons.

I could see Joseph pushing Matheson for his spot on the pens lineup, Severson not as much.

Well I don't care about Wedgewood that much honestly would just be some insurance they don't technically need. I mean if the Fitz likes Wedgewood as a person, he might as well include him so he gets a chance to play meaningful games. Unless of course there are other teams who drove up the price. Then forget about him being included.

As far as the draft picks, the Devils do need 'em. It's not just a 2nd and a 3rd though, it's also moving up from their 3rd rd pick this year to another 2nd, which would give them 4 in the first 2 rounds in the upcoming draft. I mean if the Devils didn't value draft capital this deal never works.

I just kept adding to it haha, like if you just had it as Kulikov for a 2nd/3rd next year I'd be 100% ok with that too; he is the guy I'd really like to see the Pens try to get. He checks the GRIT box and fills a legitimate roster need in blue line depth.

Well in that case, I'd be fine with overpaying a little bit. Include Joseph and another pick!
