If Toronto picked Laine first and Matthews went to Winnipeg, it would be safe to assume that Matthews asks for the same huge contract he got from TOR. This leaves WPG in a bit of a cap crunch, which restricts them from ever getting Paul Stastny and Dylan DeMelo in their respective trades.

Laine alone doesn't get you matthews, Laine elite (struggling right now) but Matthews is on a whole other level and he's a C so he's automatically worth more just for that.

If you read the disclaimer in the description of Part 2 (Toronto 2020-21), you would have known that i addressed the unrealistic air to this. "...(which i am fully aware would never have happened, but hey, this is all for fun, what-if scenarios like this aren't supposed to be taken seriously)"
It's okay, that's something you could very easily miss.

It wasn't really a "trade" in the traditional sense. According to the scenario i made up, Laine goes to TOR, Matthews goes to WPG. The Laine for Matthews "trade" was a way to move Laine to Winnipeg.
