A thought experiment:

If we assume the standings remain as they are today, Edmonton's first will be #20 overall. The Bruins, Canadiens, and Panthers picks are #51, #83, and #86 overall. I'll use this (https://bluebulletreport.com/2020/10/05/2020-nhl-draft-rankings/) in order to determine trade values.

This Edmonton pick has a value of 14.44. The Bruins pick has the value of 4.45, the Habs pick of 2.32, and the Panthers pick of 2.23. Math shows a total value of 9 going back to Edmonton and a deficit of 5.44 on Edmonton's end. That's value equivalent to the #35 pick, which suggests this is a substantial deficit.

Now, I'll happily agree that trading 4 picks for one pick is a bit silly. Is there another way for this value to be met?

Using the recent three-way trade between the Lightning, Blue Jackets, and Red Wings, AND by looking at cash dollars instead of cap hits, we can assume that $2M is worth the equivalent value of Tampa's 4th this year (#125ovr, value of 0.91). In terms of cash dollars, $12M in real dollars going back to the Sabres bridges this deal ($2M * 5.44/0.91).

By the time the Draft rolls around, James Neal will be owed $11.5M in actual cash dollars.

Thus, a much more acceptable deal for Edmonton would be Neal + #20ovr for #51, #83, and #86.

Too late now but it was so we'd have a NHL calibre D man on that 3rd pair instead of a guy like Davidson. Also he's Finnish so I think that would help Ruots and Joki cause he could of mentored them

Interesting take. I think the advantage for Edmonton is they get more picks in the draft in which they only have 5 right now. No way Buffalo takes Neal off your hands. I'm sure another team in the 20-25 range would take the offer of 3 picks for a late 1st

Something I like playing around with is Neal ($2M retained), EDM 2021 1st, a B-prospect, and a 2022 mid-late pick for two of Detroit's seconds (EDM and NYR). It's built around a similar framework but makes Neal less of an expense for the receiving team.

I don't know if there'd be a fit here with Buffalo with a similar framework unless they find a way to find another mid-late second. Not enough incentive to upgrade a dozen spots in the draft methinks.
