Nice idea but no.

1st Orpik deal was for 5.5 million not over 8 million
2nd Orpik was single year cap hit, this cap hit would be over two years.
4rd Wings have several prospects in the system.
4th Ginning is not even top prospect.
5th Avs got a ready to plug and play goalie, nothing in this deal makes Wings better, any time soon.

I thought this was not allowed because of the orpik situation?

Is it? That could well be the case, I'm not hot on all the rules. I know you can't reacquire a player you buyout for a year. That's why they traded Orpik. Rule could have come on after though.

The cap hit is largely irrelevant. Orpik was owed $4.5m Giroux is owed $5m. For a team not spending to the cap its just a way to swap some real money ($3.66m buyout cost over two years) for some picks / prospects. The Avs gave up a second to get Grubauer in the deal, I'm not sure these values are that far off with the Wings not giving up anything.

Oh maybe that’s what I’m thinking of
