It wouldn't be a shut down line. Nash and Folgino have no offence so the idea that this would be a better version of the Engvall, Hyman, Mikheyev line is misguided.

A shutdown line is not designed to create offence, it's designed to best defend the other teams top line. Which this line would be great at..

But I'd rather put Mikheyev in Hunan's spot and put Hyman back on the top line with Kerfoot going to the 4th line. It's fits the overall of the team better.

A shutdown line doesn't need to be offensively minded

No it wouldn't. Would you want Foligno and Nash going against McDavid and Draisaitl? Or MacKinnon? I want Matthews going against those guys.

It would get wrecked by McDavid and Draisaitl and MacKinnon as well.

That's kind of the point of shutdown line. To shut down the team, no one would care if that line scored 0 goals in the playoffs, because you know the other team isn't scoring when they are on the ice.

I mean Nash is one of the top defensive centres in the league and the line of Hyman-Engvall-Mikheyev have already proven to shutdown McDavid.. so if there's an upgrade at centre on that kinda line then yes. I'll take that every game against Edmonton.

Don't forget how Nash helped shutdown Matthews in the playoffs when Bergeron got hurt. He's proven he can do it, that's why Toronto got him.

Matthews would do better though. I wouldn't want Nash centring a line against McDavid.

Oh, I agree. But can't the term shutdown line refer to a lower line that plays against better competition (this line would be the 3rd best line, play the other teams second line)? I don't know I guess.

For the record, one of the best shutdown lines in the cap era was the one the Ducks had when they won the cup. It was Travis Moen - Sami Pahlsson - Rob Niedermayer and they had almost no offence to their game at all and still helped win a cup

You are just disagreeing on strategy at this point (and misunderstanding the term shutdown line). A shutdown line is a line used primarily for defense against opposing top lines. These guys often have minimal or at least lower offensive abilities.

It is not used as much anymore and is more "power vs power" (like Matthews as you say) or more of a two way shutdown forward like Kadri was.

But the classic defensive shutdown lines would include guys like the grind line of the Redwings with Maltby, Draper and McCarty/Kocur or the anaheim cup winning checking line of pahlsson, r Biedermeier, marchment and I think sometimes Moen.

I think the best way to defend is having the ability to get the puck and keep it. Which I think TO as a whole does well.

The shutdown line hasn't been a thing for years. Top players vs top players has been the way for a decade at least. This 3rd line would get wrecked by top lines.

I'm not saying I particularly want it. You just said at first it isn't a shutdown line and I disagreed. You then changed to shutdown lines are a bad idea, and that I am undecided on

Well no ****. They're all in their 40's I think. Point is, you don't need offence to shutdown a team. A line of Foligno-Nash-Mikheyev would be one of if not the best shutdown lines in the league

What I am saying is, that line in their prime would not be a good shutdown line now. That was still very much the clutch and grab years. The game is so much faster these days.

I know its called a shutdown line, what I have been saying from the get go is that it wouldn't work and "shutdown lines" aren't a thing. Bergeron has been the best "shutdown" centre for years and was also his teams best centre. Matthews is TO's best defensive centre by far. So this "shutdown" line would still be taking on 3rd lines so at that point, why not give Hyman two guys that can contribute offence to wreck other 3rd lines?

There's no way of knowing that which doesn't validate your point. But the evidence is there that they were a successful shutdown line.

And Shayne Corson was once a terrific shutdown centre as well. Does anyone think he would be good now?
