I think Seattle will just take Backlund. He is younger and cheaper and both are good leaders

Don't see Seattle selecting those overpaid long term contracts of Tyler Johnson, Burns and Skeji. That's 18.25m that can spend a lot better. Might be just a 1m players they select from Tampa, SJ and Carolina, and then they 15m to spend on UFAs.

In what world does Calgary have to pay a 2nd to move a very consistent 2-way 2nd/3rd line center in Backlund and Seattle just willingly takes Burns and Skjei for free? Let alone that is assuming Lucic doesn't waive in which case Calgary easily protects Backlund

I don’t see that happening. Blackwell is kinda just a gadget player and was only signed to fill the draft exposure requirements to begin with. That’s also why I don’t even see Seattle choosing him.

Even without incentive? I assumed Calgary needs to pay to clear that cap.

No idea but most of the mock drafts here have Seattle taking Backlund for free

Isn’t he just a bottom six forward? I protected more youth after protecting the top forwards

Well currently this roster is looking at $17M in cap space in terms of 20-21 contracts. Factoring in new contracts for the five NHL-level RFAs that probably reduces it to about $10M? I think they’ll have necessary breathing room. I also have Seattle acquiring assets for selecting Johnson. I can see the argument for Burns because of his age at a steep $8M but Skjei’s contract and potential is basically a FA signing in itself.

Thats very nice that thats what he was signed to do but with the way hes playing theyre gonna protect him over howden.
Also as much as i want to protect bellows over bailey i dont see lou doing that, and he also might protect mayfield over leddy which probably makes sense. Seattle then takes leddy.

Well I’m not making any assumptions about waived NMCs. If it happens, then cool. But from my view Calgary looks like they’re intending to move on from him and his contract anyway. That’s why I have them paying for the cap dump.

As I previously mentioned to someone else I can understand Seattle detouring from Burns and I know drafting someone for sexy name value is always a terrible justification, but he’d be the veteran with plenty of winning-culture experience that wouldn’t really be found elsewhere from who’s available. As for Skjei, I don’t think Carolina will care so much on whether Seattle takes him or Gardiner, hence no pay on their end.

If the idea is Seattle is getting paid to take Soucy over Greenway or Talbot, the value difference isn't a 1st. It's a 3rd. We aren't talking about Viktor Rask here.

If Francis doesn't take that, screw him. I'm also keenly aware of his comments about the ask being a 1st to protect players, and I don't care. He can enjoy Greenway or Talbot if that's the case. He's not getting his hands on one of our 1st's.

I guess if the Rangers tender one of their RFAs they’re planning to expose (so there’s another forward under contract), then I can see Blackwell getting the last protection slot. But are you positive that Mayfield should still get protection after the season Nick Leddy is having?

Victor Rask? Lol what does he have to do with any of this?

If you mean that’s the type of guy Seattle has to take to get a 1st from Minnesota as opposed to Soucy.... I can’t say a 3rd is enough to get them to take Soucy over Greenway. If you’d rather part ways with Greenway over Soucy + a higher draft pick then that’s all fine, but I don’t think I’ve seen one Minnesota fan on this site who’d be cool with losing Greenway for nothing.

Heres why id take mayfield over leddy. We need the cap space and leddy has a major cap hit. Also probably 1 of bolduc or salo will be ready to take leddys spot. On the opposite side we have a solid 4-5 dman who has term on a very cheap deal.
The one thing i couldve seen wouldve been trading leddy before the expansion draft and getting value. But after last offseason where they chose leddy over toews theres no way theyre trading leddy.

Except Skjei who is a respectable first pair option, I totally agree with you.

The key to success for Seattle is to draft a minimum of 20 contracts, get cheap Goalies, Dcore and bottom 6 and make a killing on the UFA market.

New team, nice city, plenty of capspace, flat cap for 3ish years, lack of competing teams. They will come.

Seattle could get their missing pieces, starting with Hamilton, wingers (Saad, Tatar, Schwartz, Palmieri, Hall, etc.) and, with some luck, a center.

The Vegas recipe of capdump deals aren't the way to go this time. Teams wont be as generous with their prospects, and the quality of players offered will ne lower than the nice and juicy UFAs.

Here's how I would do it :

For bolded => How exactly did you come to that conclusion? That makes no sense. If Backlund is exposed and Seattle chooses to take Kylington or something that's their mistake

As for Burns, I have no issue with Seattle acquiring him as I can see it happening but they definitely won't do it for free.
