2021 Keeping the band together

Created by: Wreckless
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 13, 2021
Published: Apr. 13, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Lehkonen contract is the minimum he would be allowed to be awarded in arbitration, 85% of his current year salary. His numbers this season do not make a legitimate case for more.
Specifically re: KK’s contract, I wouldn’t be surprised if players coming out of ELC sign for close to their 1 year qualifying offers. The Dahlin, Svechnikov, and Brady Tkatchuk contract negotiations will be absolutely fascinating to watch unfold.
$25mm total contract value for Danault is hardly something to sneeze at for a center who’s acutely challenged re: finding the back of the net.
We could move out Byron/Kulak to Seattle or others by attaching draft picks, but hopefully we don’t need to if RFAs across the league are signing for lower $ post-COVID.

Though I like a lot of the Canadians prospects, IMO no way should they keep this band together. Just not good enough even in the North Division. Then when the Atlantic divlsion returns not nearly good enough. Denault/Tatar gotta go and get some new blood...though I like Tatar and Denault.

I'm not going to comment on the team, but on your team's explanation. I think it'll be a fascinating offseason for RFAs: What will their term be and for how much? I think Hughes and Pettersson will also be really interesting. I completely doubt this will happen (just me dreaming), but could you imagine Seattle offer-sheeting Pettersson? They might get enough picks from other teams to make it worth it. Again, would never happen, but it would be pretty sweet to see.

I'm curious why you think that way. If we go that way, every team that are not top 2 in their division have to be torn apart? I agree that some of them can go, like Armia/Chiarot, but overall it's a strong group of player that will only get better when fresh blood will be injected.

I didn't say torn apart. IMO spending 9m on Denault and Tatar shouldn't be in the plan. Fresh blood, and the promising young players need ice time.

Normally I'd agree with you, that letting older UFA go could be a safer option, but when those said players are your two best forwards, things are different.

Good point re: Pettersson, I wasn’t even thinking about the 2017 draft. Although in his case he’s lucky that he has the hischier deal as a comp.
Quinn Hughes is in another boat as a 10.2(c) deal, so he might come in really low on a 1 year deal if Vancouver really needs the cap space. He’s not even eligible for an offer sheet.

I was shocked to hear that one. He’s not getting more than a 1 year nhl minimum 2 way deal after his buyout from anyone. If it doesn’t work out, then you terminate his contract, no risk.

Basically I read that situation as Shea Weber decided he wanted to take on a reclamation project with upside. And who am I to argue with him wanting to put in the work with a misguided kid. That would be his decision to make, not ours.

If it helps the team, he stays. If it doesn’t, he goes.

If they don’t want cap hits in and around those numbers, then you start spreading the cash around the players listed there at $750k (or longer term and more cap hit to KK).
palhal liked this.

Now that's interesting: icing 5 top lines and 5 D pairs is certainly a strategy that hasn't been tried before.

Now that’s interesting/ironic: assuming that looking at a depth chart of an organization is the same thing as “icing” 5 lines.

Loud combined with wrong? Not a good look.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to pin you out. I guess my sarcasm was fueled by the fact that this team, which is a copy paste of the actual roster, is the epitome of what could be called "bottom heavy". At some point, MB will have to swap quantity for quality if he wants his team to be dominant.

Fair point. The hope currently is that both Suzuki and KK evolve into top centers. Time will tell.

That would be nice, but I don't think it's going to be enough to push this team into Elite category.l

These playoffs will be very telling. No 3 on 3 gimmick hockey works to our advantage! Not many teams across the league with better records through 60 minutes than us.
