Taking Advantage of Cap Space and Protection Issues

Created by: Jrader17
Team: 2021-22 Arizona Coyotes
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 13, 2021
Published: Apr. 13, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
32 Mil in Cap Space - Though I doubt this team spends to the cap. I think some of the cap space will be used to take on contracts that are on LTIR or buried. Similar to what they've done with Datsyuk and Pronger in the past. Also only having 2 defenseman that need protecting the Coyotes have protection spots open, so I could see them making a trade with a team that has protection issues. Offering them a move favorable deal for an exposed player than Seattle would.

Team needs: Scoring, scoring, and more scoring. Team needs people who can plain and simple puck the puck in the net. Also with only D proven defenseman under contract, obviously need to sign defenseman. The team would be wise to target mobile defenseman - the current group, outside of Chychrun cannot skate at all. Demers, Goligoski, Hjlarmasson are all stuck in concrete. It will simply be nice to have them gone. Faceoffs, currently this team gets murdered on the dot, they need a centreman (or two) who can win draws clean. Also size, size, size, I am imagine the Coyotes will target big bodies who can skate an add some offense, similar to last season's signing of Pitlick.

Trades
1.
ARI
  1. Skjei, Brady ($2,250,000 retained)
CAR
  1. 2021 4th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Trade allows Carolina to protect the younger, cheaper, Jake Bean, while also opening up some cap space.

Coyotes get a proven defenseman - still in his prime with good mobility, lots of playoff experience, and now with the retention a very reasonable cap hit for a player of his caliber.

Coyotes use their third protection slot on Skjei.
2.
ARI
ANA
  1. Hill, Adin [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
I believe Seattle will take Hill in the expansion draft.
3.
ARI
  1. 2021 6th round pick (CHI)
4.
VAN
  1. Capobianco, Kyle
Additional Details:
The Canucks are in cap hell. Perpetuated by the puzzling signing of Tanner Pearson. They need to resign Pettersson and Hughes, as well as add depth. Loui Eriksson's 6 mil cap hit is obviously an obstacle to that. Eriksson's "real money" is only 4 mil, so the Coyotes take that on and the price is Jett Woo.

Another huge organizational weak spot for the Coyotes is RHD. It's really just Victor Soderstrom and no one else. Woo gives them a high upside player, who is right handed, Bill Armstrong isn't afraid to let players bake in the AHL, so your top 4 RHD next season in Tucson could be Woo and Soderstrom... vying for who gets to be Chychrun's long term partner.

Capobianco is still a promising D prospect but he's fallen out of favor with this staff and management. Canucks take a chance on a change of scenery candidate

Canes pass. We arent retaining and arent retaining for that long. We could buyout Gardiner and have more cap space.

You could easily get more for Loui. Add at least a 3rd, probs a 2nd.

This thing about Cap Hell is a crock of -------. All the teams last year that were cap strapped just put players on LTIR and made space. Don't let the numbers fool you. Canucks GM said two days ago Cap Issues are for the media and fans we feel quite good about what is going to be done.

Very well thought out, but the snag I see has already been noted by @ecupirate07 -- retention on Skjei for three years. Pittsburgh guys have been shopping Marcus Pettersson -- any interest there?

Whether or not Vancouver has cap problems, they'd probably like you to take Eriksson off their hands, so I see that deal as quite realistic.

Overall, a very nice job!

You say that, but a 10 mil offer sheet for Petey almost guarantees they have to pick between him and Hughes. Petey is worth more than a 10 mil offer sheet.

I’m not saying it’s going to happen but this is how decisions come back to bite you. You sign your most important players first. Had you felt with Petey and Hughes 1st, you could probably gotten out of it 15 mil total. Now you only have 8-9 mil to offer Petey. 10 mil and the picks for a 22 yo top line C is a reasonable price to pay.

I think you need to relook at how things are done these days. TB used 97 mil to make their cap work and no one OS Cernak or Cirelli . Canucks can put Beagle on LTIR put Roussel in the minors and move Jake and that is 6.5 in cap space. Secondly if a bottom team in the standings offered up four firsts for Petey then sign me up. Hughes can not receive an offer sheet
