Description

According to tankathon, you have an 18.5% chance of getting 1st overall, but a 65% of getting 3rd overall.

Let's say Buffalo is picking 3rd overall.

I say that because it is ridiculous for any rational thinker and even the craziest hockey fan to believe that an 18.5% chance in the draft lottery guarantees any team the 1st overall pick.

It's why I think the behaviour of many people sympathetic to the Detroit Red Wings and the Ottawa Senators last year basically amounted to one big collective temper tantrum :(

It's like saying 18.5% = 100% or that 25% = 100%.

Complete and utter nonsense.

Losing draft lotteries happen every year and it's a fact of life for most teams, including my own :)

Anyhow, let's say Buffalo is picking 3rd overall this year, Kevyn Adams is thinking about trading Jack Eichel away this summer and Dylan Cozens is not the player needed to fill Eichel's shoes.

That probably means Buffalo needs a #1 centerman.

The best centerman in the draft is Matthew Beniers.

The next best centerman likely won't be drafted until at least 8th overall, which is a pretty big drop from 3rd overall.

What are the odds Matthew Beniers will still be available at 3rd overall?

If Beniers is gone, the Sabres likely look at Hughes or Power, whichever is still on the board. Eklund is another option, little bit like Stutzle

If Eichel is being traded, you're essentially starting over. Even though Dahlin is there still, I'm taking the best player available, period. Hughes and Power are my 1-2, so if one of them are available, I'm running the pick to the podium. If not, I'm looking at Beniers, Clarke and Guenther.

Sabres pick 3, Eichel stays, and I want them to trade back and get multiple assest than force themselves to pick some mediocre players just because theyre more NHL ready but have a lower possible ceiling
