Avs 2021-22

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 14, 2021
Published: Apr. 14, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This scenario is if Johnson gets retained and Seattle pick Donskoi.

Having $9m+ on the 3rd D pair would effectively rule out re-signing Saad or adding another top 6 forward.

EJ lives in Newport so Anaheim would be a logical trade destination if it comes down to it.

that's unfortunate. can't see the ducks eating a $6m contract. i hope he has a place in seattle or detroit too.

Johnson could get a $2m x 2 contract which would make up the defecit from getting bought out.

MacDonald getting picked would be an annoyance, but that would be a fine outcome. There will be plenty of teams interested in trading for Donskoi or Graves one would think.

Johnson isn’t getting a 2x2 after missing an entire year, with a lengthy history of injury and the flat cap. But if that’s the route he wants to go to finish his career with a Middle tier team, or with a monster go ahead. That all being said on scale of 1-10 how surprised would you be if he refused to waive? I’ll go first 10.

i agree with all that but if you're johnson why even take that .01% chance. he has a family and a house. he's established in denver. avs can't buy him out if he's still injured.

seattle could take macdonald if they want to keep salary low but if that's the objective i think jost makes the better selection.

They covered this on the DNVR podcast. If he is hurt and on LTIR there is zero chance Seattle takes him. Seattle does need to fill their roster, and at the end of the day it’s going to Graves, Compher, Donskoi or Jost. Though I think it was @earl08 who had an interesting idea of giving Seattle Jost to take Compher and getting a pick back especially if you think Newhook can handle the 3C spot straight out of the gate.

Sakic said in his recent presser that EJ is expected back in the playoffs.

not exactly true....he said there is a chance they could see EJ in the later rounds.
Meaning avs have to go to at least the 3rd round maybe even even eh cup finals and EJ cant have any set backs.

I dont think hes expected to be back at all, hes that far out from returning,

it all makes sense and is perfectly logical but ej just might not want to waive.

i hope the avs keep jost. he's pretty effective in his role for a cheap cost. it would be nice to free up comphers money though.

I don't think Makar gets more than $7M. There are no comps for that. The best I can think of is Werenski at $5M (pre-Covid).

There aren’t comps for it because when was the last time a young Dman averaged .91ppg in his first full 82 games?

That's why I said there are no comps. Buy getting $2M more than the closest (post Covid too] seems in line.

that's good to know but how can they say that with a concussion.

It wasn't a concussion apparently. Chambers asked Sakic if it was a shoulder/arm injury and Sakic just smiled and said "UBI", and also mentioned he was rehabing well.

Avs could retain $2m and throw them a good asset or two to make it worth their while. If they trade Manson at $4.1m Johnson at $4m would be a like-for-like replacement. Avs would have $2m on the cap for 2 years but avoid $2m beyond 2023.

Sakic seemed to choose his words carefully so as not to make anyone think they were circumventing the cap. I read his body language as being clear that EJ is expected back in the playoffs.

i like the idea but the ducks are notorious for being tight with cash.

If that's what you believe then I dunno man, I think youre looking for things that arent there. EJ is done and isnt showing up in the early rounds of the playoffs. Hes injured, there is no circumventing the cap magically show up for the 1st round of the playoffs.

Werenski wasn't posting PPG before his deal at levels not seen since Larry Murphy, Leetch, Orr...

If you think he's getting over $7M for 2-3 years then there is probably next to no chance he does 7 years at $9M. That doesn't add up.

The way I read that Frankie done for the year regardless. EJ out until late in the playoffs. Ironically Eurolanche on Twitter a couple of weeks ago said Frankie was out for the year but the article was in Czech. I think counting on EJ for this playoffs would be foolish.

They don't need cap relief. They could bring EJ back and be compliant. Just gotta send others to the taxi squad. Unfortunately the dude is hurt. If he can play in the playoffs though, what a nice boost that would be!
