He looked great last night, and hopefully it doesn’t happen because I love the guy, but eventually he’ll start dragging his ass out there and you’ll be frustrated

I mean literally the only way WSH could be perceived as the winners of that Mantha trade is by Mantha actually taking some steps forward. He already reached the peak of what he could achieve in Detroit.

As of now, I'm taking the DET package 100%.

Maybe we should wait until Vrána plays at least one game with the Wings.

Yes the Capitals slightly overpaid with that extra 2nd. That shouldn't have gone to DET, but Caps are trying to win now. Mantha helps them win now. Vrana is a beast, but Mantha just matches Caps style of play way more. Don't think either team really won, but did.

"awful" is extreme. So ill give you my perspective on this but i dont respect your opinion but here we go

Panik + 2nd = fair. dead cap dumping 2.75m x2-3 years.

Mantha > Vrana imo.. at worse they are equals. Capitals gave a first bc A) Mantha is better B) Vrana is an RFA not signed and the way things were going he wasnt going to sign or go to arbitration.

this could have be a Panik trade but Mantha seems to be a great fit (one game) where Vrana was loafing bc he was frustrated

i could see the trade being a draw at best if the wings miss with both picks but as it stands now it's a great deal for detroit.

People ragging on Mantha's struggles while Vrana was in the same boat. Mantha's ceiling is higher and can be helpful for Wilson, Vrana is highly overhyped. That 2nd was for Panik dump. Unless that 1st turns into something nice, WSH win imo. As a NYR fan, hopefully he lumbers around the ice and infuriates psycho Tom and Ovenchicken wink

He's playing with Backstrom and Oshie.... id say he can maybe take a baby step forward but if he doesn't 70-75 point forward is what they were hoping Vrana could turn into... im not saying Washington necessarily won but im trying to say they didnt get killed like most were saying

As of right now I think Yzerman absolutely fleeced WSH, but I'm open for Mantha to prove me wrong.

At the very least, Mantha has to absolutely crush Vrana statistically, because he's playing now in the better team with better linemates.

Cost certainty on Mantha was huge too. You never know what Vrana would command as an RFA with arbitration rights. That's more important to this team right now than a first in this year's draft which is likely a crap shoot.

Was the package hefty? Yeah, it took me aback for a bit. But if Mantha fits well and the Caps go on a deep playoff run, are we really gonna care? At least we gave up a first for a player with term and not for a true rental player.

I, at first, thought this trade was awful for the Caps and my eyes lit up and head reared back when I saw it. However, after researching Mantha, looking at his highlights and seeing him on 2LW with Backy and Oshie...that second line with him could be absolutely ****ing terrifying to teams in the playoffs, which it wasn't with Vrana. Mantha's combination of speed and size is impressive. He's now our best winger not wearing #8, and his style seems to mesh beautifully with Oshie and Backy.

So yeah, if the Caps go deep this year and Mantha has a post season worth remembering, this trade will have been justified. Let's remember, Vrana has been a literal 0 in the last two post seasons, it won't be hard for Mantha to outperform that.

Dsp and Vrana had a similar playoff when they won....both had 8 points. Vrana was always a non factor when it mattered so Mantha will just need to produce better than a 4th liner in the playoffs to outdo Vrana. 0 points last 2 playoffs

I think one of the biggest things to consider when evaluating this trade (and really all the Trade deadline moves) is what it tells you about the overall league and its current market, and imo that is with this flat cap moving big and or overvalued contracts and is going to be very expensive for the foreseeable future along with the fact that the cost of trading for and or signing good players has dropped significantly. Look at the cost of signing Sheary (1.5 AAV) in the pre-covid market there is no way he takes that offer with the season he is having. I wouldn't be surprised if Yzerman would have done Mantha for Vrana straight up (or closer to it) but he knew he could charge a very hefty premium to take Panik. Another thing to consider is that a 1st round pick this year, especially a later 1st round pick, isn't as valuable as this draft is going to be a far bigger crapshoot because scouting for it is so tough.

15:55tio 31.82CF% 37.50FF% 40.71 xGF% one goal.... this could also be a big reason why Vrana was moved.
