2021 Seattle expansion

Created by: Wreckless
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 15, 2021
Published: Apr. 15, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This goes against my usual thinking but the Kotkaniemi contract extension should be 1 year.
I think it makes more sense for Marc, and the players, to hash everything out the following off-season when the team knows what the cap situation is going to look like more clearly. And also, now that the team is more or less set, we’ll have more data on the relative value between Suzuki, Kotkaniemi, and Romanov (and Danault, and Tatar too if they want to be thrown into that mix, albeit a slightly different category). 1 year deals could make sense for all in this (rare) occasion.

Unfortunate casualty of the flat cap, but an excellent player and role model during his time here and he will be missed. Fully deserving of haven worn the CH and I wish him a helluva run this postseason (hopefully) to fill a lifetime of memories. He’ll be good for Seattle and their young players. Will skate like the wind and always work his tail off pushing the pace of the team overall.
Part of the return here is having Seattle not take any of the options we don’t want to lose (most specifically, Allen).

I think most agree that dumping Byron would cost around a 3rd. I'm not sure though, with Seattle, that the difference between a 2nd+4th and a 3rd is enough to convince them not to take Allen.

Honestly, the other goaltending options available for Seattle likely won't compare to what Allen can bring to the table.

I'd wager that 2nd compensates enough for not taking Allen. But that 4th isn't enough to convince them to take Byron.

They aren't doing any favors for Habs just because they could do it.

I agree with you that I wouldn’t be surprised if the price would be a bit more, but I don’t think I’d be far off.

I disagree with the logic that Byron could. help the young players on Seattle. There are going to be plenty of veterans on Seattle....they are drafting 31 NHL vets.
Seattle aren't going to be taking 31 bad cap contracts , so the chances that Byron is selected even with sweeteners is rather low.

Everyone has a price. And if Seattle follows the thinking from the last time around, they’ll load up on D with a huge chunk of their 31 picks. D generally have significantly more trade value across the league, (and even moreso after half the league basically just lost their 4th or 5th best D). So get paid extra for every useful forward you’re able to add, and then trade out your excess D for even more picks.

Fair point re: not an over abundance of young players though. Although Vegas still did find quite a few young forwards among their initial group. But the same could be said of any team, so my point wasn’t of any particular value.

Lack of speed is what currently plagues this team. We can't go into next year with Armia, Suzuki, and Toffoli together, let alone Staal and Perry together on the 4th line.

The identity needs to change, if your team can't skate you will not win in this league. MTL has opted to go with big defenseman so speed up front should be a high priority than normal.

Caufield is going to play. That team is put together as it stands now to see what the cap would be. Totally agree with you re: speed being critical going forwards.
