What would happen is the same thing as what happened to Hossa's 12 year deal, or currently Weber's 14 years / Keith's 13 years. He would have played it out...or he would have been traded to a low salary team where Ilya's payment would be $500k, but his cap hit of $6M would help Melnyk curb the NHL rules for being on the cap floor.

We lost two high picks, including a top-10 pick in 2014 over that debacle.
And we are paying his recapture penalty through 2025 (even though he has had contracts with three different NHL clubs since).
NJD got majorly hosed on all sides.
