The trade value of Mattias Ekholm for next year

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2021-22 Nashville Predators
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 16, 2021
Published: Apr. 16, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There were some really scary times this season for Nashville.

Now, the trade deadline has passed and Nashville is the clear favourite to lock down the fourth and final playoff spot in the Central division.

So, there was less incentive to sell off key players like Ekholm.

This post is about what I think Ekholm's trade value will be next year.

Next year, every player will have 1 less year on his current contract.

That means Ekholm will have only have 1 year on his contract instead of 2.

That will effect his trade value.

I used two trades as a point of reference for determining Ekholm's trade value for next year.

One is the Andrej Sekera trade from 2015 between the Kings and the Hurricanes when Sekera was still in his prime.

The other is the Jake Muzzin trade minus the forward prospect, Carl Grundstrom.

The teams that are being used here are the 4 teams that were linked to Ekholm before the trade deadline, according to the Fourth Period.

They are illustrative examples.

Let me know your thoughts about all this and I'll see you in the comments :D

For one year, not worth it for MTL

Seems reasonable. Maybe just a first gets it done though.

        If Nashville gets to pick...
        1. Boston
        2. Philly
        3. Habs

I mean if Nashville holds on to him through the expansion draft why wouldn't they just extend him? I think part of the reason people didn't want to trade for his contract this year is because it would mess up their expansion plans. Where the additional year would typically be a positive, this year it was sortof a negative as teams wouldn't want to give up the assets and then likely lose another valuable piece in expansion that they may of otherwise been able to protect. I just don't see reason to trade Ekholm. IMO he's more important to the team than say Ellis. Ellis should be odd man out.

If NSH were to trade Ekholm though, I'd rank these offers in order of desirability as:

        1)PHA
        2)MTL
        3)BOS
        4)WPG

Based purely on how likely I think the above teams are of being a lottery team next season. The secondary piece is much less consequential than getting the highest possible draft pick here.

        I did the same.
I guess I am more bearish on Boston next year.

I think WPG has an edge because of goaltending, but it was pretty much a toss-up for me. Having to see a lot of Ekholm, when the divisions go back to normal next season was a factor too.

Think the Flyers will be more inclined to trade for Ellis then Ekholm. Could see something involving Konecny since NSH could use some offense.
