Open Protection Spots and Cap Space

Created by: Jrader17
Team: 2021-22 Arizona Coyotes
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 16, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think you can make an argument that the Coyotes have the best chance to take advantage of the expansion draft more than any other team.. except maybe Detroit.

As it stands now the Coyotes would like protect in a 7-3-1 Kessel (NMC), Keller, Schmaltz, Dvorak, Garland, Larsson, one of Pitlick/Crouse/Fischer

OEL, Chychrun, blank spot (no seriously we don’t have a 3rd D that qualifies for protection).

Kuemper.

They way I see it. Between the blank D spot, the Pitlick/Crouse/ Fischer spot, and Larsson. The Coyotes essentially have 3 protection spots available. Since those two forward spots are currently taken up by players who are not worthy of protection and losing any of them would not hurt any decent team.

There are several teams with protection issues, whether it’s St Louis, Minnesota, Toronto, Tampa, Carolina, etc.

It is CRUCIAL.. no VITAL. That the Coyotes upgrade and use their 3 available protection spots as leverage. The same can be said of the 32 million in cap space. It NEEDS to be leveraged to upgrade the roster.

Trades
1.
ARI
  1. 2021 7th round pick (CHI)
CHI
  1. Fischer, Christian
Additional Details:
I would very much not like to watch Christian Fischer play for the Coyotes any more. He's an active negative player at 5v5 and generates no offense. For a guy with size he's such a perimeter player. He's from Chicago, Chicago likes to trade for people from Chicago.
2.
ARI
ANA
  1. Hill, Adin [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
I assume the Hill will be the expansion pick by Seattle
3.
MIN
  1. Capobianco, Kyle
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (ARI)
Additional Details:
Instead of losing Dumba for nothing to Seattle.. the Wild get decent pick and an upside prospect back.
4.
STL
  1. 2021 4th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
St Louis is likely to have to expose Blais, Barbashev, Sanford, and Dunn. They recoup something for Blais instead of losing him for nothing or having to make a side deal with Seattle on a protection arrangement.

Obviously from his time in Stl Bill Armstrong knows these players well. Blais fits the profile of the kind of player he's been open about wanting to bring into AZ.
5.
ARI
  1. Eriksson, Loui
  2. Woo, Jett
  3. 2021 2nd round pick (VAN)
VAN
The Canucks are in cap hell. Perpetuated by the puzzling signing of Tanner Pearson. They need to resign Pettersson and Hughes, as well as add depth. Loui Eriksson's 6 mil cap hit is obviously an obstacle to that. Eriksson's "real money" is only 4 mil, so the Coyotes take that on and the price is a second round pick and decent prospect in Jett Woo.

Another huge organizational weak spot for the Coyotes is RHD. It's really just Victor Soderstrom and no one else. Woo gives them a high upside player, who is right handed, Bill Armstrong isn't afraid to let players bake in the AHL, so your top 4 RHD next season in Tucson could be Woo and Soderstrom... vying for who gets to be Chychrun's long term partner.

I've heard from Canucks fans that this a fair price and I agree. Taking the full freight of Eriksson is a lot but the extra pick and prospect make it a smart long term play for the Coyotes.

A 3rd and a LD who's had success in the AHL but hasn't been able to stay up with AZ in the NHL...that's not gonna get Dumba.
The Wild can go 8-1 keep Dumba and Seattle can pick from Greenway, Foligno, Hartman, Soucy and Talbot.

It's just funny to me when a person says, I hate watching this player so much... and please pay us to take him away.

I like everything here except your idea of Matt Dumba's trade value, and the problem is that Arizona doesn't have the expendable high draft pick I think that acquisition would take.

    Don't be insulting...

Your not getting Dumba for a 3rd and a meh-level LD prospect. Dumba's value was a 1st+ before expansion draft concerns then, same as it is now. Just because people think they can lowball us because of the expansion draft, doesn't mean his value is any less than a 1st+.

Either you give us Dvorak for Dumba strait up.

    Or

Give us Hayton + your 2022 1st for Dumba

Take your pick, it's one or the other.

The Wild will go 4-4-1 so they don't even need to move Dumba but just to play into this narrative that they need to move him or lose him for nothing, that offer gets laughed at

Well the comp coming back the other way is literally a 7th round pick. Not like I have Dach coming back the other way.

I'm not trying to say Chicago wouldn't do it, just saying how you handled the trade is funny.

You so sure about that 4-4-1 protection? Signing Greenway to a two year deal knowing well in advance he'd a be a player who needed protection doesn't make much sense to then expose him.. especially given his play this year, he's gonna get protected. Second, you're at 23 mil in cap space next year with Kaprizov, Fiala (probably 12 mil combined), Eriksson-Ek (around 3 mil) and Kahkonen (around 3?) .. so that's 18 eaten up right their with the Johansson and Bonino spots to upgrade/fill? Dumba's 6 mil out helps with that problem.

Dumba is great he really is. But if he's exposed (which he will be) he's gone for nothing.. literally nothing.. and any side protection deal you make with Seattle would cost you a lot more than what I proposed (most likely handing over one of your two 2021 firsts..) which if you'd rather give up a first to keep Dumba that's fine that makes sense.. but the idea that any team would give the Wild a 1st or a top prospect for Dumba when the Wild are over a barrel doesn't track.

Capob isn't a meh level prospect though

Almost scored at a point per game rate in the AHL last season as a 22 year old D and it wasn't a JSchultz playing with Hall/RNH/Arco situation at all

He nearly had the highest scoring rate on the team!

Why write such a big post while ignoring a key detail

It's not his fault AZ don't call him up more often

I'm a little bias right now, I'd accept this trade my family is good friends with Christian's family and I know him and he gave me his world junior stick as a birthday gift. Bowman wanted to draft him in 2015 and wanted to trade for him in the Strome trade and Hossa trade but Arizona didn't want to give him up. He has good numbers in the juniors and AHL and know who maybe a change in scenario in his home town he can thrive.

SO we give up Blais for a measly 4th and then have to lose another player in the draft?
