Description
Spitballing some ideas for trading Matt Dumba so that Minnesota can go 7-3-1 for Seattle. Trade made prior to the expansion draft so that Minnesota can protect Foligno, Greenway and Schmaltz in addition to the two NMCs and Eriksson Ek and Fiala. Qualifying exposures: Hartman, Rask and Sturm, Soucy, and one of the goaltenders. Exempt: Allison, Boldy, Kaprizov and Rossi.

Arizona has a protection slot open for a defenseman, but it's highly questionable whether they'd be willing to part with Schmaltz. But the two extra draft picks may persuade them if Dvorak and Hayton are deemed future top-2 centers.

I agree that 8-1 is off the table. I'd prefer to trade Dumba if possible even if the return isn't ideal. But I can't see GMBG adding picks to our side of that trade unless it's our 4th for their 5th or something like that.

That being said, I like Schmalz. I like Arizona as a trading partner. If there was a lower asking price for him, I'd be very interested. But I wouldn't give up a first, Rossi, or Boldy.

So still wondering why is 8-1 off the table? If BG can't get a good return for Dumba why not keep him and let Seattle take Greenway? Or are you valuing Greenway more than Dumba?

I wouldn't say 8-1 is completely off the table, but I do think it's less likely than it was at the start of the season. Dumba is not putting up the points and not being used on the PP to really make it an easy decision to protect him.

His play has been fine, but has he been worth his $6m contract this year? He wasn't worth it last year, and the year before that he got injured and missed most of the season. I can make an argument for protecting him in an 8-1, or leaving him exposed in a 7-3-1.

Dumba for Schmaltz 1 x 1 isn't the value I'd hope for in a trade with AZ but if that's the best value BG could get so be it. MN would get a serviceable top 6 C while alleviating the expansion draft issues.

Maybe I missed it but, what was the rational for the 8-1 being off the table? If there is no Dumba trade to be had I'd rather have Seattle take Greenway than Dumba. Both are playing well this year. The getting cap space relief for Dumba is only a 1 year fix as Greenway would need a new contract with, I assume, a big raise.

Simply put, why lose a guy you like when there is a reasonable alternative? Going 8 and 1 means losing one of Foligno, Greenway or Hartman. If Dumba can be traded (presumably for an expansion-draft-exempt asset or two), then the loss to Seattle is a marginal player. And the theory behind losing Dumba is that the cap relief is worth it -- an evaluation with which I don't personally agree.

I could just see a real possibility where the other GMs give cents on the dollar for Dumbas value pre expansion draft. If the return is worse than the value of Greenway, assuming he's who Seattle takes, I'm ok just letting him be taken as I value Dumba more than Greenway.

Simply put pre-injury Dumba = Hamilton, now Dumba = Risto (just on a competent team). Wild fans (and GM) want Hamilton value for Dumba, but he hasn't been that guy in a couple of years now.

I value Greenway more than Dumba. Dumba is a 6M cap hit that can be better used for part of Kaprizov and/or Fiala. Also, we have Addison and Mermis ready to step up to the RD2 slot for much less. Dumba has not brought his offensive game since his injury two years ago. Ultimately, Greenway is much harder for us to replace.

Mermis is a 27 yo LHS d-man with 22 career games and is a UFA after the season.

He looked good next to Brodin in the games he played this year.

It was 2 games, and to be fair most everyone looks good next to Brodin.
