Hyman is worth as much to the Leafs as Nylander

Created by: Britishbulldog
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 17, 2021
Published: Apr. 17, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hyman has been at least as impactful as Nylander if not more so. Even this year look at the stats AND eye test:

GP G A Pts +/- PIM Hits Bks GW SOG Pct
Zach Hyman
42 15 18 33 19 28 68 21 4 113 .133
William Nylander
39 13 17 30 11 8 11 14 2 96 .135

...So either Nylander is overpaid compared to a championship team comparable player **OR** everyone is expecting Hyman to take a massive pay cut compared to how Dubas paid Nylander and the Big 4.

It is frustrating as a 52 year old Leaf fan that the 1st time in my life that I could see the Leafs having the building blocks for an annual Stanley Cup contender status and Dubas pays the building blocks contracts comparable to the 2 worst managed teams in the Salary Cap era (Buffalo and Oilers) rather than the Stanley Cup contenders (Tampa Bay, Boston, etc) where NOT one player makes more than $10 MIL.

As important to the team yes , as good a player well probably no but hes a different kind of player. Hes the kinda guy you need to win though. While I don't think he gets that contract I think they do everything to keep him.

Nylander is on a great contract. He's not overrated, Hyman is just very underrated. Hyman is expected to take a discount because first of all, he's expressed his desire to stay in Toronto, second of all, with a flat salary cap every player will be making less money then they would in a normal year. And finally, Hyman is way older then Nylander, Nylander was given that much money because he's expected to get better, Hyman isn't expected to get any better, he's in his prime right now. I think 5x5 might be what Hyman gets

Bang on.

I think whatever he gets or what Leaf fans (and other fans) feel Hyman's worth will set the proper amount Nylander should have gotten.

If that’s what it takes to keep Human in Toronto it’s better to let him walk. He’s averaged 41 points at an 82 game pace in his career coming into this season. That’s not someone you pay nearly 7 Mill long term at 28 years old. He’s more of a guy who can move around in the middle 6 maybe get some PP time and if needed can get some time with the top line. 4.5M max. He’s definitely underrated though great 2 way player.

If Zach Hyman isnt on the first line, do not pay him more that 3 mil. Thats not a knock on him as a 3rd liner, he works there too, but if Hyman isn't making Matthews and Marner better by playing on that wing, hes not worth that cash on this cap strapped team. I think he gets 5 mil because paying complimentary players who aren't as productive without the stars next to them is how you end up paying 9 million for Jeff Skinner. Again, I love Zach Hyman, and hes worth 4-7 mil, but ONLY IF he plays with the top 6 because his value is in making the stars around him better

I agree. I've said it multiple times he's more important to this team than Nylander and they should trade Nylander before letting Hyman walk. I don't think he gets that much, because he's expressed a desire to stay, and take a discount, but they cannot afford to let him walk. He's essentual to their success.

Nylander has elite offensive talent, which costs a premium. His contract should have been the same as Ehlers, who was an easy comparable, but that's another story.

If Toffoli got 4.25, I can't see Hyman getting more. As much as I like Hyman, Toffoli is even better.

You're right about contract management. Toronto will have to sign contracts like other Canadian teams do (if Winnipeg can do it...). If they continue on that path, their window will be closing too soon.

Hyman has been superb this season but Nylander still has been better I mean it's an uphill climb for Zach to = him with Willie being inherently so much better

Lots of stats but nothing remotely analytic

Hm what a surprise 🙄

Also why no mention of Hyman playing mostly with the leagues 2nd most dynamic scoring duo and Nylander playing mostly with Tavares and Kerfoot

Despite that Nylander 6.3 Crel% Hyman 1.4 etc.

Just one season of Hyman with regular linemates

That's all I ask ✔

His *entire* career beside superstars so far

Vesey level scoring numbers coming your way asap

You're upset about the Leafs cap management, and yet you're basing the valuation of Hyman on a career year approaching the age of 30?

The part about Zach Hyman that makes him great is not just his ability to just play with stars but make stars even better players because of how he plays the game. Don't put him with regular linemates, because it makes all parts of the line he was on before worse, including himself

I had continually seen Hyman's line mates benefit from his tenacious play by digging the puck out against all odds and getting it to them. Hadn't really thought of opposite perspective of Hyman getting it to Simmonds or Engvall and not getting his stats padded by elite offensive finishers.

Whether you are right or wrong, I greatly -- GREATLY -- admire someone who advances a heretical theory contrary to "generally accepted wisdom."

As someone who has frequently plowed his own lonely furrow, my hat's off to you.

The nylander signing was alot different than this hyman one though. Hyman is a ufa and has more leverage than nylander. Nylander was what 22 coming off back to back 60 pt seasons. They chose to pay him and not bridge him which I think was a huge mistake.
