Finding centermen who can cope while playing for Torts

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2021-22 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 17, 2021
Published: Apr. 17, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A few loose assumptions are made here.

1. Torts comes back to coach next season.

2. Using their first round picks, Columbus focuses on drafting players that can play center and have a good, healthy player-coach relationship with Torts .

3. Columbus focuses on acquiring a player in free agency that serves the same purpose.

4. The center position is something that has been a real sore spot for Columbus for a very long time.

5. In this ACGM post, the center position is treated with paramount importance above everything else for both the draft and free agency, even though it shouldn't be.

6. This could help alleviate it.

7. Player descriptions about Johnson, Dean and Duke are partially provided by dobberprospects.

If Columbus fails to win the draft lottery, this is the centreman they should consider looking at with their own 1st round pick.

If there is one thing that Torts likes, it is consistency.

Johnson has shown no ability to slow down since coming to the NCAA. He is second on the University of Michigan in points, with 25 total points in 23 games. He is a shifty electrifying center who thinks the game at a high level. Johnson is usually always one of the most consistent players on the ice, showing off his flashy hands and playmaking abilities. This makes him very dangerous, but combining his offensive skills with strong fluid edgework and skating, he can carve the ice quickly, create space, and make the opposition hesitate.
      2.
      CBJ
        Zach Dean
        TOR
This is the centerman Columbus should consider looking at with either the Toronto 1st or the Tampa 1st, whichever is higher.

If there is one thing that Torts likes, it is high energy, two-way centremen that can shut down top lines from opposing teams.

As a leader on one of the youngest teams in the QMJHL, Zach Dean has been tasked with the heavy lifting job of not only supplying consistent production for the Olympiques, but also aiding in shutting down some of the league’s powerhouse lines iced by Shawinigan and Val d’Or. Dean is an energetic forward who can succeed in the role of puck hound as well as setup-man. His blend of off-puck anticipation as well as technical skills that enable reptile-like puck retrieval makes him the type of player whose likelihood of projecting to an impactful two-way player, quite likely. Additionally, Dean’s ability to manipulate his northbound transitional speed and effectively distribute the puck once he reaches the offensive zone makes him the type of player who could factor into a teams’ top-six.
          3.
          CBJ
            Dylan Duke
            TBL
This is the centerman Columbus should consider looking at with either the Toronto 1st or the Tampa 1st, whichever is lower.

If there is one thing that Torts likes, it is swiss army knife type of centermen.

Duke is a swiss army knife forward who is strong on the puck and his feet. While not the biggest player, Duke thrives in front of the net. Whether shooting in space or banging in goals, he has a knack for the net. While his ceiling isn’t tremendous, Duke has all the makings of a rock-steady utility forward with goal-scoring upside.

At this point bringing Torts back would be insane. They need a fresh start

When you're typing out something lengthy, the devil is in the details because of human error.

What it does illustrate is that it is difficult to find anybody who would love playing for Torts.

Danault would be a good fit, however I see his contract being somewhere on the lines of 5m x 5 years. Similar to Pageau.

After the playoffs last year, the Habs offered an extension of 5 million x 6 and Danault turned it down.

Basically, the exact same contract you're describing.

I'd be a bit surprised if he was offered that again, since he is performing worse compared to last year.

I doubt Laine will sign for $5 million when his qualifying offer is $7.5 million

This is if Laine and the Blue Jackets go to arbitration.

He's performed considerably worse compared to when he was with Winnipeg.

Atkinson, Bjorkstrand and even Roslovic have all played better than him this year.

I used the cap hits from Atkinson and Bjorkstrand as a guide to decide what Laine is worth after this year.

If Laine thinks he will get less in arbitration, he will just sign the $7.5 million QO. I agree with your take on Laine's play.
