Created by: Tyler_A10
Team: 2021-22 Dallas Stars
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 17, 2021

Description

Montreal: Recieve a 2021 WAS 3rd round pick in exchange for not selecting Jake Allen, select Jake Evans

Yeah but they aren’t going to let Seattle have an exclusive negotiating window and to do something dumb like 8x9. But even if they did that the Avs are going to go 7-3-1 to get to protect 2 extra guys because Burakovsky although streaky is a 20 goal scorer anchors the 2nd power play and can play left and right wing. It also allows them to force the Kraken to draft a player they designate which is almost 100% going to be Graves, Compher or Donskoi. I saw you protected Francouz and Graves and I’ll tell you imo Seattle isn’t drafting someone that missed the entire year (Francouz), and Colorado is loaded on defense, with a healthy Byram Graves is the 5th defenseman, with a healthy EJ he is the 6th, and with Timmins getting another pro season it isn’t unrealistic to think he is the 7th dman throw in Barron and Helleson being available before Graves contract is up and you have the nicest little piece to dangle before Seattle. But again all just my opinion, and thanks for going through all the work and posting.

They have to have a certain number of players under contract via the expansion draft. Plus, Seattle can’t pick him. It’s against the expansion rules.

Just as an FYI, Deangelo cannot be bought out by Seattle if they select him in the draft! It's in the rules for expansion draft, no player can be bought out once drafted. Seattle will only be able to buy out drafted players after the 2021-22 season.

Besides, it's already been reported by the Insiders at TSN that New York will buy him out this summer.

Seattle absolutely can draft a UFA like Landeskog they have to take at least 20 players under contract for next year with a total cap hit of at least $48.9M, that means theoretically they could take 10 UFA’s, do I think they do that many no, will they roll the dice on a couple of teams get cute and try to protect other players that way yeah. But in COL’s case Graves is going to be there and with his play, age, and contract it’s really tough to see them passing on him, the other option is JT Compher who gets crazy hate from Avs fans on here, but he is a 30pt guy who can play center is still young and plays special teams. It’s tough doing these XD ones so kudos to you for doing it.

To be honest if a GM did that, the owner would have to fire him. That would be a massive waste of a pick and would be a mistake that could cost the team for a long time.

Bruins might protect Lauzon over Grizz IMO - younger, RFA status and cheaper in flat cap world.

I agree that it could potentially be a waste of a pick but if they are willing to “buy” a player to be the face of the franchise and the player ends up with $1-$2M more AAV it wouldn’t be the worst move ever, especially if say COL got cute with Landy or EDM did it with RNH, that player is probably forsaking a cup but an extra $10M on the duration of a contract is pretty enticing.

Hypothetically RNH could do that if they picked him but he could be stuck in a bad situation and no way out of it. I don’t think any UFA would ever take that risk. Especially, Landy. He is in a good situation and has MacKinnon feeding him.

Oh I agree, but look what happened with VGK, and $10M extra in the bank account is $10M in the bank account, players are swayed just like people. VGK got really lucky MN and FLA were really dumb, but there are some teams desperate to shed cap space so imo it’s going to be fascinating to see what happens.

To also add to the previous comments about UFA's. As it has been pointed out already, Seattle is well within the rules (and their right) to draft any player that is a UFA. And yes, by drafting such a player would give them an opportunity to try and sign him before free agency opens officially, which would be after the entry draft in late July. What hasn't been posted in a comment yet (I don't believe) is that a UFA that gets selected by Seattle does not have to sign with them, making it a useless pick by Seattle.

I can see several teams not protecting UFA's but having a verbal agreement in place with the player/agent that as soon as free agency opens, they sign on the dotted line.

I would suspect that if Seattle had a UFA in mind, they would reach out to that player's representatives to find out about the possibility of signing after getting selected in the expansion draft. Otherwise, I don't see why Ron Francis would take that gamble. Impossible to know what will happen of course but, like the Vegas expansion draft, I predict several teams making side deals with the Kraken to "lose" certain players off their roster!

Landy doesn’t need protection as he is a pending UFA. If he signs an extension before the expansion draft he would but currently he does not.

Exactly. Washington did the same in 2017 with Oshie who was a UFA. He was not protected.

Many ppl here open their mouths with such assurance and yet have no clue how expansion works or even the history of expansion. Mind boggling.

And the Avs going 7-3-1 isnt happening lol

I messed up on the Landy thing, forgot he was a UFA. Imo, Avs still go 4-4, Burakovsky is protected, Kraken take Donskoi

Yes. They'll have a rough cap situation, many of their forwards are expendable and guys like Compher, Burakovsky leaving would create cap room for so many of their young forwards coming in like Newhook unlike their defense that needs protection with great contracts. They aren't losing a guy, like Toews, who's been one of their best players.
