    2016 Eric Staal
    CAR
      Aleksi Saarela
      2016 Second Round Pick
      2017 Second Round Pick

This trade flopped for the rangers since this was the last "contending" year and staal did literally nothing for us outside of 2 good games in the regular season. The only fortunate thing is that none of the picks given up turned into anyone decent. C-

        2016 Mika Zibanejad
        2018 Second Round Pick

I think everyone at the time was astonished that Gorton not only got a younger player with a much higher upside for a player not much better than him, but also got a second round pick along with it was a steal. A+

            DET
              2017 Third Round Pick
              2018 Second Round Pick

At the time this trade was made it seemed like a little bit of an overpay for smith. However he did play well in the playoffs alongside Skeji in his rookie year. C+

              NYR
                2017 Tony DeAngelo
                2017 First Round Pick (7th)

This was a solid trade for what was essentially an overpaid regressing center and a starting goalie who was just behind hank. This was the first trade to start the rebuild in the sense that we were getting futures back and it was a good job by gorton even though he busted on the pick. A-

                    Ryan Spooner
                    Matt Belesky

This may go down as one of the best trades in Rangers History. We got essentially two top for defensemen, spooner (who was turned into strome) and a cap dump and gave up 40 games of an expiring Rick Nash Contract. A+

2018 First Round Pick (Nils Lundqvist)
2019 Second Round Pick (Karl Henricksson)

This trade is hands down the worst one Gorton has made. We traded a top 2 Defensemen and a top 6 winger for Hajek who is still an AHL level defensemen and Howden who has not developed at all. Namestnikov was shipped for parts at a later date without making an impact. The only hope is if Nils turns out amazing (which so far he has been in the SHL) D-

                            2019 Ryan Strome

I dont know what was going on with Strome in EDM but hes been amazing for us. He really has changed my mind on him this year going long term. All we have up was a struggling Ryan Spooner. A

I always thought Zuccarello should have gotten a first at the deadline but i guess no one was offering it. He was an expiring contract and had to be shipped off for picks anyway, average deadline trade. B

                                    2020 First Round Pick

This was a solid return for Kevin Hayes. everyone knew he was out the door the second he signed the 1x5 contract. Lemieux served as a serviceable 4th line grinder for a couple years. B+

He was going to sign with the rangers anyway but two seconds to have him for that one year was totally worth it.

                                              Neal Pionk

This trade sure looks bad looking back on it but at the time many people thought the rangers won. I think a big part of it is Trouba is so overpaid for what he brings to the table. Also Pionk has gone off for the Jets. However, I cant really blame jeff for dealing him because we had a log jam of right defensemen and DeAngelo at the time was playing much better than him. C

Getting a first for Skeji was a great return. He never took that next step after his rookie year and was awarded a contract he didn't deserve. getting a first for him is an overpayment. A

Since March 1st, Skjei and Pesce have given up, respectively, 1.32 and 1.17 even-strength GA/60 while paired with each other the entire time. Whatever issues the guy had as a Ranger, he's become quite the solid stay-at-home/PKing defenseman as a Cane. I do agree, though, that Gorton did well to get a 1st rounder in a good draft for him. I just wonder if there's some flaws in Quinn's defensive system and usage that led to some of the issues that Skjei and (later on) Trouba have gone through in New York.

Detroit drafted Jonatan Berggren with that 2nd but it there was no way of knowing that at the time. So I agree the Smith trade get a C+.

He didn’t really have issues in NY. We had 8 D that season and so much in the pipeline. The trade was the smart thing to do, plus we needed cap space. Brady got us a 1st because he’s worth it. Since we lost him, we also lost Staal, ADA and soon to be Smith

Generally agree with your grades, but you are too lenient on the Trouba trade. So very bad that was.

I do agree, though, that Gorton did well to get a 1st rounder in a good draft for him. I just wonder if there's some flaws in Quinn's defensive system and usage that led to some of the issues that Skjei and (later on) Trouba have gone through in New York.

ruff was part of the issue

Generally agree with your grades, but you are too lenient on the Trouba trade. So very bad that was.

i mean it wasn't bad in value... it was the contract that was bad

the Mac and miller trade isnt gonna be horrible bc nils is already projected to be a better man than Mac and he's way younger obv. henricksson will be a solid 3C and the other things is wasn't the worst trade ever

Oh, I think it was also pretty bad in value. I'd rather have Pionk than Trouba, plus giving up #20 OA in a draft with a very deep selection through to the end of the 2nd round.

in hindsight, but pionk wasn't that good at the time and trouba was the big fish

I see. I also could see the possibility that Skjei's contract was more worth it for Carolina than for the Rangers, since the vast majority of our near NHL-ready farm hands consist of forward prospects and not defensive prospects. You can kind of see in the Canes payroll how our defense is expensive but our forwards and goaltending are not.
